Okay, James Cromwell is a big star, and I am a fan. But he just seemed to come out of nowhere, or at least very minor, forgettable roles through the 1980s and into the 90s. Then Babe and L.A. Confidential - when he was in his mid-50s - and even more when he hit his 60s. Now he's everywhere, and in top roles. And he's great.

So what's the deal? Did he find his "on" button at 55? Start taking acting lessons? What?

Oh, how I wish I could believe or understand that.

I agree with you that he deserves the recognition he's got after all this time, but I do wonder whether disappointment is misplaced here...his support of these various institutions could surely just be taken to show that he dislikes both racism and cruelty to animals, there isn't always necessarily an extremist element to it. And plus, neither makes his achievements as an actor any less.

I don't want to seem like I'm attacking you, this is entirely intended as polite, reasoned discussion, for as much as that's worth :)

How is wearing an African cap off-the-wall? And what is wrong with someone who doesn't believe in cruelty to animals? When is not being cruel to other living beings radical? You sound ignorant and like a racist to me.

Yes. I've noticed my enjoyment of movies generally enjoys an inverse relationship with my knowledge about the persons involved.

Cromwell has been around for years, its just no one really noticed but he was a familiar face until Babe got him the Oscar nom. Then you put the name to the face :)
