Her absolute best film performance is in

...ALBERT NOBBS! Anyone else agree?

I think this is the one she should of won an Oscar for, instead of Meryl Streep winning for THE IRON LADY. Don't get me wrong, Meryl Streep's performance was good, and I know it's all a matter of opinion, but my vote would go to Glenn, definitely!

I think so. She passed as a man in a sort of "Victor Victoria" kind of way. That is to say, if we didn't know she was really woman, we would think she was a man that was a bit less manly. But, since we know she's a woman, we see her as a woman pretending to be a man – which is what the character is supposed to be anyway. So, I think she's very good at playing that character.

The thing that might have made it easier for Glenn as an actress though, is the fact that she's not supposed to be playing a real man, but rather a woman pretending to be one. So if some semblance of femininity happened to slip out, that would be okay, because in the film, we learn early on that the character is really a woman – but having to disguise herself as a man for social purposes.

Here's the lovely trailer for the film, which I must confess to having watched several times – because it's so beautiful!

Side note: Glenn Close actually wrote the lyrics to the song that you hear in the trailer, which is sung by Sinead O'Connor. 

One film, that I can remember, where it was a surprise (from the audience's POV)is William Castle's 1961's HomicidalOh, I don't believe I've ever seen that film – perhaps I'll check it out sometime. Sounds interesting and quite unusual for the time.

Regarding ALBERT NOBBS though, while the audience knows Glenn's character is a woman (because we're supposed to know), the people in the film are unaware – until one of them finds out. They completely believe her as a man, but just a strange one. A few times in the movie, she is referred to as "a strange little man".

She was fantastic in Albert Nobbs, well deserved Oscar nod. But her best film performance is still in Dangerous Liaisons, imo.
