Anyone know why Gene Wilder taped his tribute to Mel, and wasn't there in person?

I think he's just retired and doesn't want to be seen in public. I think the last TV interview I saw him do was on Conan in the late 90s.

thank you for that. I know he's retired... the being out in public thing makes sense. He lives not too far from me, in Stamford, CT.

I read he's 80 (gasp) now, don't think he's well.

and in contrast, Mel Brooks is 7 years older... and spry and as we say, doing well.
