Which is better?

Space Oddity

Major Tom

Space Oddity, no contest. Schilling's sequel, Major Tom, is a good tune, especially for the 80s, but nowhere near the quality of the original song.

reply

I echo this sentiment.

Space Oddity.

Major Tom isn't even the second best song about that character: Ashes to Ashes is superior as well.

reply

I'd argue that even Hallo Spaceboy is better than Major Tom.

reply

You know, I'm a big Bowie fan, I've never heard Hallo Spaceboy. I'll have to give that song a listen and give you a "thank you" for reminding me to always be listening to more David Bowie. Thanks, Ghaleon!

reply

No problem. I'm a casual fan of Bowie. I've heard most of his singles, but the only albums I've listened to all the way through are Low, Outside, and Heathen. I've been meaning to get into more of his work, particularly the stuff from the '60s and '70s.

reply

The essential album is probably Ziggy Stardust. That's his most-known work, I think. The Man Who Sold the World is a good, solid rock 'n' roll album if you're look for more accessibility.

If you want aural, cerebral jet-fuel wrapped up in strange candy, go with Blackstar. And if you want to kick that into overdrive, listen to Blackstar and then immediately listen to his first, eponymously-titled, album. A *lot* of the themes and ideas he kicked around as a lyricist culminate in Blackstar but started with his first album, so listening to them back-to-back is cool.

reply

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll probably go through his discography chronologically. A while back, I intended to listen to The Berlin Trilogy but ended up only listening to Low.

reply

Chronologically works, too!

reply

Just listened to Hallo Spaceboy; great stuff.

I just stumbled over this article. It's not essential reading, but it does give a good, quick overview of why Bowie was so unique, as well as being unable to pinpoint it (could somebody pin down Bowie?); I read it and remembered our conversation, figured it was worth dropping it here on the off-chance you're interested:

Bit of a late response on my part, but thanks for the link. I'll give it a read.

I've never really heard Major Tom (Coming Home) much, it flopped in the UK only reaching number 42. If I had grown up with it I may like it a little more but now, but it’s really just an oddity to me.

reply

that is surprising. it was a big hit here in canada.

Major Tom in German is a great song and one of the better singalongs ("Dann hebt er ab..." is spine tingling good)

But Bowie is Bowie.

Major Tom is a good tribute to Space Oddity, but not anywhere near as good.
