Each one of his movies have sucked but when we went to see Pulp Fiction we felt like we were cool doing it so much that we didn't realize it sucked.
Just MHO.

Back then, his style was fresh and new. Now we are sick to death of his pop-culture dialogue and foot fetishism and all his other cliches.
Back then, I loved Reservoir Dogs, and I liked Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown was OK. I haven't really enjoyed any of his movies at all since then. The last time I tried to watch Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, I got bored and turned each of them off. I dislike The Kill Bill movies, I HATE Death Proof and I was very disappointed by Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained and The Hateful 8. His style just gets more and more self-absorbed and masturbatory with every picture.
I have been holding off on watching Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, because I love the time period it's set in and I've read a whole lot of books on the Manson Family. I have such high hopes for this movie, but knowing Quentin, I'm really afraid it's going to stink when I finally do get around to watching it. I mean, if Tarantino can even make me hate his Westerns and WW2 movies, I really don't have high hopes for Hollywood.
Concerning the Manson Family may I recommend Charlie Says? It has a really new point of view...
shareI'm going to have to check that out. I think the absolute best portrayal of Manson I have ever seen was in the series "Mindhunter", and that only covered interviews when he was in prison already. I wish that actor would do a full-fledged Manson story movie or series.
shareYes, I liked this portrayal in Mindhunter too.
shareYou seem a bit of a downer. You manifest your own destiny. You want every movie QT makes to be some cutting edge masterpiece. He was never a revolutionary, he just pays homage with flair. Chill out, relax and watch any of his movies and they are great. He has never made a bad movie. They are all watchable, and then some. It must be hard to live up to pulp fiction. He ain't Superman. Dude doesn't let people tell him what to do though.
Off topic, but I hope QT does a horror movie next. Could be sweet.
My problem with Tarantino is that he puts way too much of his own personality into his movies. Every one of his films, no matter what genre it is supposedly part of, is not actually of that genre. It's a Tarantino movie rather than a Western, a War film, Crime, Martial Arts, etc.
I like directors who have an immediately identifiable personal style, such as Sam Peckinpah, Martin Scorcese, Michael Mann, etc. but Tarantino is a stylist to an extreme, and I just did not happen to care for that style after the novelty wore off. If you like that style, fine, but to me, too many digressive discussions of pop culture and foot massages and appropriative misuse of old grindhouse gimmicks just don't work for me.
Of all the movies associated with Tarantino, the only one I still appreciate is True Romance, which was only scripted by him. I think if Tarantino had directed it, I probably wouldn't like it now.
I love true romance. We can agree on that. Also a huge Christian Slater fan though.
Every problem you seem to have with QT is what I think makes him great.

Pulp Fiction was a bore. Reservoir Dogs was pretty good when I first watched it but today I don't think I'd bother to watch it again. Kill Bill has some rewatch value. Probably his best of the ones I've seen. Natural Born Killers and True Romance show that he's an average writer. I'll likely pass on Kill Bill vol 3.
shareI'm pretty much there with you. Though I do like Pulp Fiction the best (Tarantino's cameo is excruciating however), while Reservoir dogs comes a sound second. After that? meh.
Films like Django Unchained, Inglorious Bastards and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood annoy me -- I tire of his changing history so the good guys win storylines.
The rest of his films are nods to old westerns and Kung Fu films, nothing wrong with that, just doesn't interest me.
Death Proof was horrible, no plot or point whatsoever.
He's a talented filmmaker obviously, but I grew tired of his fixation on paying homage to crappy B films.
So you originally liked it cause you were jumping on the bandwagon. Now that everyone thinks it's overrated you're jumping on that bandwagon. Do you have any original thoughts? Anything of substance to add to the conversation?
shareBy Hollywood standards, QT is quite the achiever:
His movies often have exploitation roots and extreme "ultra-violence." (Jackie Brown is the exception, but it has a lot of murders anyway.)
His films have a lot of profanity, and famously in a lot of them -- "the N word."
Women are beaten and killed in his movies -- but mainly by other women(in Kill Bill). Or they are bad women(Daisy in The Hateful Eight.) Exception: What Walz does to the beautiful German spy in Inglorious Basterds. But then men are beaten and killed as well.
QT himself has likened his movies to "heavy metal" -- he does not WANT mainstream acceptance. He's making politically incorrect movies(think: Blazing Saddles) from the 70's...today.
And yet:
He won a Best Screenplay Oscar for Pulp Fiction.
He won a Best Screenplay Oscar for Django Unchained.
Chris Waltz won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Django Unchained.
Chris Waltz won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Inglorious Basterds.
Brad Pitt won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Ennio Morricone won a Best Musical Score Oscar for The Hateful Eight.
And many actors were Oscar nominated for QT films: John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Robert Forster, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Leo DiCaprio. QT himself has had nominations for other screenplays and his direction.
Plus: his movies usually make a ton of money internationally -- without a comic book hero in sight.
Like him or don't, QT is one of the great successes of our time. Big stars want to work with him; Oscars go to his work, he makes a ton of money(and used to get tons of women before he married, a true sign of Hollywood success.)
He is also a great, unique writer of screenplays and has proved to be a great director of action(especially in Kill Bill 1.)
But not to worry. As of this date(2021), QT says he will only make one more movie.
I have 'Sin City' and it was okay, but nothing to write home about. Then there's 'Inglorious Basterds'. Even Dianne Kruger's presence didn't help in that film.
shareBased Tarantino hater.
