Career bombed because she was born in the wrong era

Sharon Stone always seemed to me to be a throwback to the cool, calm and sophisticated blonde starlet of the 1950s and '60s (think: Grace Kelly, Janet Leigh, Faye Dunaway or Kim Novak). I think that if she had been working back then, she would've had a decent career appearing as the love interest in capers opposite leading men like Paul Newman and Steve McQueen.

But she emerged in the late 1980s and unfortunately, this was the era where if an actress was seen as a sexpot, the only thing she was good for was appearing in nude and graphic sex scenes. I think this is why her career pretty much bombed in the 1990s. She was born in the wrong era.

But Sharon DID show plenty of skin, in "Basic Instinct". That led to her getting steady work for a while.

I agree that she has a classical beauty, like this perfect blonde type of actress, but Basic Instinct basically launched her career and without it she woudn't even be on the map. WHen she starred in basic instinct she was already 32 which gave her a really late start and she could only play the sex god for so long..Plus her one-dimensional acting didn't help her at all she was only good at playing mysterious, grumpy whores and not any other roles, like she was plain horrible in Sliver, Specialist and Intersection with Richard Gere..Her one-dimensional acting didn't help her much either plus she had a personality issue working with multiple directors..

But I agree, she had this goddess vibe, like Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, or Kim Basinger, but all of them had a much better career than hers 'cause they are more versatile..

This.

She's suddenly fantastic in Casino...but fairly plastic-y in just about everything else she's ever done.

She was given serious roles (such as in Last Dance)....she just wasn't particularly great in them.
