He's been like that for 20+ years, and simply failed to change with the times. Stars also live in a very weird mindset, because 95% of the people around them are just Yes Men...and they are getting all this money thrown at them for basically "being themselves"... So for some of them, they get further and further removed from reality.
I don't think Mr. Spacey was ever quite stable to begin with. His dad was a Nazi idealist tyrant who battered his family, sexually abused Spacey's brother...and from the looks of it, him as well.
Basically, he's a sick, damaged person. Talented, but foul.

His career as an actor is basically over. You're right, he was probably a damaged child. Too bad he never got help. Even as an adult there are plenty of organizations and doctors who treat this kind of mental issue.

None of this excuses his behavior, but it does lend some context. There's nothing (so far) to indicate Spacey's an unrepentant serial abuser like Cosby and Weinstein appear to have been.
