You're right- the idea of an eighty something man with a thirty something woman is absurd. However, the reason these relationships were/are better tolerated than the opposing older woman/younger man kind is that they were/are about money, not sex. Women pursue older men because they have money. If older women were pursued by younger men who were obviously mercenary (as mercenary as say, Anna Nicole Smith chasing her "divinely sexy" nonagenarian billionaire) most of them would lose interest in their boytoys very quickly.
