Charlize wasn't a star until the 2000s. But yes, Demi was a face of the 90s, also Sharon Stone, Meg Ryan and Julia Roberts (though Julia's career didn't die down after the 90s like others did)
Remember Winona was with Johnny Depp for a few years so that would have been a significant part of her fame. She was also with golden boy Matt Damon after he got famous with Good Will Hunting, but I think they kept their relationship pretty low key.
She wasn't the biggest of stars though, she wasn't like Julia, Demi or Meg. I was 5 in 1990 and 15 in 1999, I remember Demi quite well, mostly because she was in a film called Striptease when me and my friends were entering puberty (of course I didn't actually go and see it in the cinema). But I only vaguely remember Winona from that time (I remember a little profile of her in the Radio Times and seeing her listed as the guest star for Lisa's Rival in The Simpsons) the only film of hers I actually watched growing up was Beetlejuice and she's not very recognisable as Lydia. I didn't see Alien Resurrection when it came out, I was 13 and it was certified for ages 18 and over. Those were about the only two Winona films that were on my radar until I really started getting interested in films when I was about 16.
So, I wouldn't say she was the face of the 90s, not in the mainstream sense. Only for people who were into her kind of work.
