No way. Murray was the best one of them all. Ramis was really good in his role but he needed a Bill Murray to make him better. Ackroyd's character was a weirdo who could not have carried the film. Pete Venkman pointed out the ridiculousness of his friends. Chevy Chase might have been alright as that character, but I personally am not a fan of his and would have never seen it.
sharedeja vu!
While his part could have been done equally well by any number of actors, you really only needed someone that was going to be the guy that didn't really believe in what they were doing... hell even someone like Bob Newhart could have pulled it off... and in the end you would have had the same movie... but you probably wouldn't have gotten as many people in the seats to see the movie. The reality is the movie is kind of silly so your best hope of attracting an audience on something like this is filling it with named actors that will bring in the audience. Murray had his followers from Stripes so he brought in a chunk of audience that would appreciate this type of movie. Chevy Chase wasn't quite as big a draw when they were making Ghostbusters because it would have been made right around the time his movie Modern Problems was out and it wasn't knocking them dead, Stipes had pulled in about 3 times as much money so studios would have had a lot more confidence in Murray being able to help draw in an audience than Chevy Chase. In the end movies stopped being about who was best for a role a long long time ago... it's all about who the producers think will sell the most tickets, especially when its a movie that no one has much faith in.
shareReplacing one flaming asshole with another.. Yes, Murray is an asshole but my disgust with his person doesn't change what I see on the screen.
For what it's worth, I thought he showed amazing range in Monuments Men.
