It's one of 'those' Oscars

The one you get because you haven't gotten one beforehand and it's in a film about mental illness, no less. Oh, baby, that's Oscar gold.

reply

No it's not. She had best reviewed performance of the year. Two actually, with Maps to the Stars too.

reply

Absolutely. Yes she could have gotten one for Far From Heaven or The Hours but she didn't and if this year she won only for Maps than it would have been a sympathy Oscar. Not with Still Alice it's not.

"Those" Oscars are these bla bla achievment Oscars... can't believe that they humilated Peter O'Toole with one.

I kinda agree with the OP. I love Julianne Moore and she was good in Still Alice, but I feel it was a weak over film over all. She was far more deserving for Far From Heaven or The Hours, also I feel that she should have been nominated for The Kids Are Alright along side Annette Benning, if not instead of her.

I honestly think she would've won this year whether she'd won before or not.

Who else would've won, if not her? Marion Cotillard was in a French-language film from a tiny, tiny distributor; it was surprising enough that she got in in the first place. Rosamund Pike looked like she'd be a strong contender when her film came out, but given that she was Gone Girl's only nomination, I think it's safe to say the Academy didn't embrace it like they did Fincher's previous three (and Pike is still too much of a newcomer to succeed on her own like Moore did). Felicity Jones had the advantage of being the only Actress candidate whose film was also up for Best Picture, but even then, she was a first-time nominee, and Redmayne monopolized the attention for The Theory of Everything.

Reese Witherspoon is the only nominee I could see threatening Moore. She had a banner year (Wild, Inherent Vice, producing Gone Girl), her comeback narrative, Fox Searchlight (the #1 studio right now when it comes to awards; they won 8 Oscars this year and had two Best Picture winners in a row) and Jean-Marc Vallée (who had also just directed Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto to Oscar wins). It would've been a tight race between them, and I could see either one winning. Both certainly had the critical acclaim for it.

Reese had all these advantages, but since she didn't have the best track record after her Oscar win, they might not have been in a hurry to give her a 2nd so soon, and thus might've settled for a nomination. Moore, on the other hand, was in a tiny film that didn't get traction in any category other than Actress, but she's had such a consistent, prolific career over the last few years that I think she'd have enough good will to win the whole thing. She's worked with pretty much everyone in the industry, and from what I gather, she's got a great reputation. I think she would've won for Still Alice one way or another.

Reese can outact Moore any day, she's a natural, powerful actress. Moore doesn't come close to having that screen presence.
