The Comeback Completed
Now bring on that Viking movie

shareI wouldn't call it completed.
Hacksaw Ridge only got a limited release, and without much marketing support.
It's essentially an independent movie....and the only reason it has gotten some attention at awards time is because of good word-of-mouth.....and, because there's no denying just how good it is.
But it has no chance at an award. Hollywood is still trying to push the door closed on Mel as much as possible. But at least his talents are at least getting (some) attention again.
You obviously have no idea what it means for Mel Gibson to get nominated for Best Director over the likes of Scorsese, Davis, Washington, Eastwood, Ford and Larrain. He's the only one not to be nominated for the DGA. They could have nominated the film in the other 5 categories, BUT THEY WENT WITH MEL. That's a redemption and a comeback of epic proportions.

shareIf you guys both think "The Comeback is Complete", that is your constitutional right.
I happen to feel Mel is still being slighted, shortchanged, pushed away, avoided, downplayed.......and he deserves better.
Getting nominations is a START.
To say his comeback is "complete", IMO.....is wrong.
Even his latest ACTING venture (Blood Father), as good as it was, only got an extremely limited release, and was buried rather quickly. The movie deserved a chance. It deserved wider distribution, better marketing and better support.
Mel....is still being marginalized. His "comeback"...won't be "complete" until the Hollywood big-wigs who deliberately blackballed him....publicly apologize, and open the doors back up to him.
Delighted he got nominated! About time! A Viking movie by Mel sounds very cool - Braveheart meets game of thrones :-)
shareI see your point. It's hard to say he's made a complete comeback until we see what kind of acting offers he gets. A comeback from a directorial standpoint was always going to be easier than one in front of the camera. I'm very curious to see whether The Professor and the Madman will get a wide release or at least be positioned for Mel to get some acting awards consideration.
