After 1980

I think that after 1980 DeNiro stopped acting and just started being De Niro. There are probably a few exceptions...but Taxi Driver and Raging Bull are so different from the De Niro I recognized before seeing those films. The films that were good after 80 he seems to be pretty much the same guy, and the ones he isn't are garbage movies. One of film studies instructors refers to him as the greatest actor ever...I don't see it really. And he is playing Madoff in a TV movie? He starred opposite 50 cent?! Just some really odd things. And made multiple movies a year for the past 40 years?! It's sort of impressive I guess...but just...odd.

Watch The King of Comedy.
There are probably other examples of him playing a character and not relying on his persona but that's the only one I can think of right now off the top of my head. Not that leaning on his persona is a bad thing. It has maintained him and he is always interesting to watch. Also it isn't as easy as it looks. John Wayne was the same way, played a character other than his image a few times (Red River and The Searchers spring to mind) but mostly stuck to being John Wayne. But who else could be John Wayne and pull it off? Nobody else, that's who. It's to be commended.

I stopped reading after I read the OP's first sentence. This guy has no idea what he's talking about.

Thanks for educating me then.

De Niro's career is a joke now. He hasn't made anything of interest since CASINO.
