Scientology as a corporation is tax exempt. Thus, when people make "donations" to the organization by paying for classes and the like, the scientology corporation does not have to pay tax on that income.

It also means that if people make these "donations" they get to take a deduction on their taxes.

It's not money laundering or tax evasion. It is a cult though--a cult that is hiding behind "religion" and getting tax exemptions for it.

I do believe that scientology's tax exempt status as a religion should be revoked though. Then they would no longer get those tax exemptions mentioned above. And it would be calling it what it really is--a cult, not a religion.

It is a cult though--a cult that is hiding behind "religion" and getting tax exemptions for it. I was with you up until this point. The word “cult” is simply an insulting word of opinion used by a critical outsider of the group—not an actual thing that exists in fact. I do believe that scientology's tax exempt status as a religion should be revoked though…Right, because you are morally opposed them and deem them a cult. That’s how it works when you have antipathy for a religious group. I mean, have you ever heard anyone say, “I think [insert religion] is an evil cult, but I am totally cool with it not paying income taxes"
