Why so many gloomy movies?

JCon in her early roles is like a ray of sunshine and puts a smile on my face. But ever since '91 I haven't seen her in an upbeat movie again. Maybe she wanted to be more than a pretty face and take more challenging roles but is making sad movies really the only way to do that?

Nothing upbeat since The Rocketeer (1991)?

Dark City (1998) has a "kind-of, sort-of" not-quite-positive-but-not-exactly-negative ending. It's certainly not Hallmark Channel (no kiss), but it was a long, dark road to reach their final, sunlit destination.
