English or Irish?
I know he was born in belfast but is he of Irish or English decent?
shareHe's Irish.
shareBritish.
shareWhat do you mean by descent? You mean centuries ago? In that case, he may well be a mix of Irish, Scots and English descent (like many people from the northeast corner of Ireland). Branagh is an Ireland-rooted name. If you mean where his parents are from, as best I can tell, they, like him, were born on the island of Ireland, probably in the north.
Or are you asking about his identity?
My impression is he is someone who could be called both Irish and British (I've heard him call himself both.) Although he's lived in England a good deal of his life, I'm not sure how likely it is that he considers himself English. I've never heard him call himself English. Has anyone else?
He considers gimself IRISH, and of course he doesn't consider himself English, why would he? I've heard him emphasizing that he's Irish and NOT English. Which is totally understandable...

I didn't say that he would. But he has lived in England since he was nine, so it's not surprising that someone might think that he's English. Whoever submitted his IMDb bio seems to think he's English, since he's described here (rather bizarrely, imho) as a "Northern Irish-born English actor".
shareHe's an Irishman who grew up in England, so a bit of both.
