'Northern Irish-born English actor'....????

How did he manage to pull off that trick? (the description on the biog).

I know actors often have identity crises - playing all those different roles. But if he is Northern Irish born (and also has parents who are Northern Irish), then he isn't an 'English actor'.......

I've heard him say several times that he's British, deeply British. Which is correct since he's from N. Ireland.

Many people from Northern Ireland are not ethnically Irish, they were English brought in to supplant the Irish in their own land.

reply

Most of the Protestant settlers sent to Ulster to supplant the Catholic natives were Scots.

And regardless of how he identifies himself, Branagh is very Irish. Just look at the guy! If he were any more Irish, they'd have to bottle him.

"Nope, Hipster nonsense. I'm out."

His acting career has been in Britain. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. He got his experience there, his training there, his fame there. British Actor.

Setting aside the issue that where one has a career isn't what defines their nationality, the point here wasn't whether he can be called a "British actor." The term "British" wasn't even used in the description. It's whether "Northern Irish-born English actor" is a good way to describe him. If nothing else, it was an awkward phrasing and appears to have been changed.

I've heard Branagh call himself British; I've never heard him call himself English.
