Intentionally not funny?

I absolutely love him as Edmund and Mr. Bean. I even thought he was funny in Rat Race.

However, in interviews he is very straight and seems to avoid cracking "polite" jokes that even the most stuck-up celebrities will attempt to make. I'm always baffled and somewhat startled when people who play such funny roles aren't funny in interviews. Do you think it's intentional?

It has always been known that in reality he is an extremely shy and reserved person. A lot of Actors hide behind they're characters. He has also in the past (particularly in the case of Mr Bean) done complete interviews where he has pretended to be the character.
