Why is neuroticism such a heavy theme in many Woody Allen movies?

Movies such as Annie Hall and The Purple Rose of Cairo feature neurotic characters that are discontent with their lives. Why is this such a heavy theme in Allen's films and is it truly reflective of his personality?

reply

Duh. Dude's a headcase.

reply

Neurotic, yes. Headcase? Doubtful. We're all neurotic to some degree, about something.

I think he's said at some point that he is neurotic to some extent, but not nearly as neurotic as the characters in his films. Especially with the characters that he played himself, I think he just found that he was very good at writing and playing them and that they worked very well on the screen.

In response to the question. Does The Purple Rose of Cairo feature a neurotic character. I never noticed. I'll presume you're referring to Cecilia or is it someone else?
