There's long been some competition between Cruise and Pitt as they're often at the top of the list for plum roles. According to a Google search, Pitt was on Ellen talking about having a pitbull lick his face. He says "Tom Cruise, my friend, will tie himself to the side of an airplane and it will take off and land. I put apple sauce on my neck so a pitbull would give me love and affection. I don't know who's braver." According to Tarantino, Cruise really wanted that stunt man role (which Pitt won an Oscar for) in OUATIH, but when it came to casting, the stunt man should resemble the leading man, and Pitt's a much better fit for DiCaprio.

Pitt also produced the Departed with the intention of Cruise taking DiCaprio's role and Pitt playing Damon's, but it never came together (for whatever reason). In the late 90s, Pitt wore a t-shirt that said, "Tom Cruise," and they've been show-business friendly by all indications. There's a famous quote where Pitt says that he initially did not like Cruise, who was "always coming at people with a handshake," but after becoming a superstar and playing the game, he probably recognized the need to constantly perform.
