Most likely - this year's leading star performance pushed into supporting to guarantee a nom/make a win more likely. It's tough for character actors at the Oscars these days. The supporting characters were conceived to give them a shot at gold but nowadays they have to contend with slumming stars.

He's one of the worst big-name actors in the history of film, but I wouldnt be at all surprised if he won an Oscar soon.

It'd be like Reese Witherspoon's Oscar - given in recognition of his excellence as an industry power player. And excellent he is, except in front of the camera.
