He was NOT bisexual. These rumors were printed in tabloids, of course (and in that so-called, unreliable "biography" written by Porter) but they are totally unsubstantiated.
If he had been bisexual, do you think that, in the seventies, he would have considered making a film about a love story between a coach and a male athlete ? In those days, the stars who were gay or bisexual kept it secret. Can you imagine Rock Hudson wanting to play a gay character ? Of course, not !
Once again, he was NOT bisexual. He had homosexual friends and supported gays'rights, that's all. Of course, there were rumors, one of them concerning Gore Vidal, who strongly denied it, saying it was ludicrous and that, if something like that had ever happened, they would not have stayed friends all those years. Rumors can't be avoided when you are a big star, but that does not mean they are true.

I just find these rumors and the people who believe them to be so absurd. The reason why trashy tabloids stay in business and make their money is because there are the gullible ones who will believe just about any rumor without there being any evidence to support it.

Entertainers put up with it because of the fact that they are in "showbiz"; what's more appalling is when you see the mainstream press acting as if they are a tabloid and treating serious news topic in the most sensational way. It's like the press is pandering to the lowest common denominator.

I'm Reminded of E News when Paul died they more closely covered Dj Am's plane crash. probably cause of how Joanne had reacted on the red Carpet at the 2006 Sag Awards when E Correspondant Guiliana Rancic made a pass at Paul so wish that video was available you could see on Joanne's face that she wanted to slap G upside the head but she didn't because she has more grace than that all she did was glaire at her like don't hit on my husband

An abundantly faggy Dirk Bogarde played obviously homosexual characters already in the 1960´s, and in more than one film.

I was just about to point that out. I admire Dirk so much for that.

Also, at a time when Jewish actors usually covered up their Jewish identity as best as possible, including changing their last names and what not, Paul Newman took a shirtless picture with a Star of David proudly on a chain around his neck, as well as the fact that he took on the lead role in Exodus, which was all about the Jewish struggle for a homeland. Loved Paul for this.

Lastly, if you ever saw that bit where Paul Newman and James Dean were auditioning together and flirting shamelessly, well, for me that made it obvious that neither one of them was completely straight. And with Dean it's a pertty well known fact by now that he was bi.

PS - Personally, I heard about Paul possibly being bisexual when he was alive and before I saw his joint audition with James Dean. After I saw the audition, well...

But either way, I kinda hoped the truth would come out at least after he passes away if no one dared opening up the issue while he was alive (the truth = it would at least be talked about and he would at least address the issue directly and openly). Sadly, this discussion here is proof that if the truth doesn't come out while someone lives, it never will.

I don't know why I'm surprised. There are plenty of historic figures we now pretty much know were either gay or bi (like William Shakespeare, to name but one), yet people just don't wanna believe it, so they don't.

Darwin Porter is mentally ill,and I have no idea what he writes about Paul, but from reading only Gore Vidal's 2009 photo album, I have to conclude that Paul did like some sort of sex play with men.

Perhaps more will come out after Joan passes.

I am straight, and don't wish this to be true, but it just strikes me that Paul had a more complicated sexuality than his fans here are capable of believing.
