TCM Ignores the Great MM

Why?

reply

I think because they want to give other stars their chance to shine. They want to remind audiences before they forget. Marilyn already occupies such a big part of pop culture... Her face is instantly recognizable, even if you have never seen any of her movies.

But TCM does need to remember that she was a major star while she was alive and was in some very popular movies that were reflective of their time. I'm glad they give a lot of time to other stars... but I think they do neglect Marilyn too much, out of defiance. They should at least dedicate her birthday to her, and play her movies all day that day.

___I think the reason is a whole lot more calculated, and extremely negative. Personally I don't give a flying you know, I never watch the channel, period.

reply

I do watch TCM, but as you know, I feel the bias against MM very keenly. As I've said before, it's not even that her movies aren't shown with any frequency--and when they are, one gets a negative intro on her "problems." But her image never appears in any TCM promotion--not even a glimpse of her. No specials, no documentaries, as the network has done for others.

It seems to me they try to pretend she didn't really exist.

reply

One of the reasons is because most of her films were at Fox, and TCM doesn't have the rights to those films so they can't show them anyway. Hence why the only ones they seem to ever show are Some Like it Hot and The Misfits, which are from United Artists i believe. TCM shows mainly WB and MGM films, so had she been a star at Warners or MGM, her image would be all over TCM like Harlow, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, etc.

reply

TCM shows plenty of FOX films, and at one time or another, they've shown all of Marilyn's major movies from that studio. They simply don't show them very much. (And when ANY of her films are shown, there is an inevitably unflattering intro. But you don't hear the same negative drumbeat about other, even far more troubled and troublesome stars.)

As for image, no matter what TCM thinks of Monroe, she was, as The New York Times stated in the first sentence of their obit--"one of the most famous stars in Hollywood's history." Her image, therefore, should be reflected on a network devoted to famous vintage films and stars.

Oops i did more research after i posted my message. TCM has indeed shown some of her Fox movies, How to Marry a Millionaire most of all. And All About Eve is being shown on Aug 16. But yeah, they've made their indifference for Marilyn obvious by the fact that she's never been a Star of the Month, ever. One of the biggest female stars of all time yet she receives no love.

reply

Everyone ignores MM. She's so underappreciated as an actress.
