is it time for a new Bruce Lee biopic?
With the release of the infamous "drug letters" recently and the revelation of Bruce Lee's many extramarital affairs, is it time we finally get a new biopic about Bruce Lee?
For as much as I enjoy Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, I think we can all agree that that film plays more into the LEGEND of Bruce Lee (and I don't mean that godawful TV show), than the actual Bruce Lee himself. Over the years, Lee has always been portrayed as this untouchable, immortal, superhero god. Before, his death had always been the subject of debate, one that includes theories ranging from something as simple as an allergic reaction to aspirin to far-fetched explanations such as murder and mystical curses.
Now that these two bomb shells have been dropped, is it time for us to finally get a biopic of Bruce Lee that gave us a more even-handed, objective look at the man? One that presents both his virtues and flaws in equal measure?
For me, seeing a new Bruce Lee film where he's depicted as both a man of great ambition and talent, as well as one prone to impulsiveness, temperament, and an unhealthily obsessive desire to achieve greatness, would be a delight to see. It'd be right in line with a film like Whiplash, in that it asks the question of "How much are you willing to give for greatness?"
I think it'd be a great film. Someone like Martin Scorsese or Damien Chazelle could probably do a bang up job with it.
What do you think?
