Any actor that nails and is perfectly right for a role is on a par with every other, in THAT sense...the question is, how often can he do it?

Fassbender in Shame..

Robert De Niro in Raging Bull
Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood
Joaquin Phoenix in The Master


But I agree with kbrai - Brando's top four performances are in the league of their own.



Fassbender - Mara - Blanchett

Bardem in a sense i considered brando esque with his body language now that fassbender is doing X-men films and has passed his peak.His fanboys charged him up like he was going to be the heir to the brando mantle and the guy fell short .His legacy is showing off his hairy pogo stick in that hack steve mcqueens movie . Take pitt off the table he shouldnt even be honorable mention .Ive heard from people while living in hollywood that the guy can't act his way out of life or death situation .He like clooney are only as good as the directors they work under .Rourke i would agree with but he's very technical you can see the gears working behind his performances .Last but not least pacino in godfather too i thought he was a excellent follow up and a smooth transition into the michael corleone role .I would definitely agree with pacino being on the same level as brando in his performances i think brando was more nuanced though .

It is unfortunate that Fassbender has attached himself to some questionable franchises as of late. His three movies with McQueen are very good. Shame is a powerhouse performance.

Let's not forget Brando was in the Island of Dr. Moreau. In fact the last 20 years of his career is unremarkable at best. This doesn't diminish him as an actor but it is there. Also he's just as technical as Rourke which technically they both frequented the same conservatory. You can see Brando turning his head to read cue cards from various points. It's not bad. It's just there.

You are spot on about Pitt. Only as good as his director can get him to.

Brando was interesting, and sometimes great, but there have been many actors both before and after him that have given performances that equal or surpass any of his.
