What was his issue regarding memorizing lines?

Was he that much a diva that he couldn't just do this one thing that all actors do? Isn't memorizing lines the most basic, non-issue for any actor? It's like a chef saying he's not going to use a knife. What the hell was the point of being difficult in that way?

He was allegedly a big stoner and memorizing lines became difficult for him. Lots of older actors over the age of 40 have used cue-cards and ear pieces. What's the big deal?
It didn't effect his performances!

It's just very unprofessional and speaks to a holier than thou, diva-like mindset. Drug use getting in the way of your job performance? Great, then be professional and cut the drug use. What kind of arrogant ass needs to get babied to the point where his lines are placed all over the walls in the scenes that he shoots? That's so silly and ridiculous.

There's varying reasons. If I remember correctly, Kevin Spacey remarked that Brando felt he could be more spontaneous and within the moment than having the lines rehearsed.

I know it sounds like BS but there is some truth to this. There are actors that will memorize their dialogue with the inflections and emotional tone with which they plan to deliver. This results in bad acting and something that isn't truthful.

I suspect it's a combination of that and him being difficult.

when you're brando you simply don't need to memorize lines

Though, with the projects he picked at the end of his career: one wonders if he ever read the scrip in the first place.

It's a pain in the ass, and he got to a point where he just didn't give a rat's ass anymore. So he used cue cards.
