Marlon Brando in today's world

In this strange, sick new land of remakes, reboots, and endless trains of franchise sequels, what do you think Marlon would think of all this?

Would he still be successful? Remember, this is a man who refused to be in sequels of any kind. Or second takes.

Would he and his fellow actors be struggling... Or would Hollywood be struggling around them, to make them happy as they churned out movie gold?

And if the answer is that Hollywood made movies around their actors in the past... What happened? Why is today's Hollywood filled with actors that act like you or I do, every day we punch our miserable time-clocks? Churning out the same product day after day like assembly-line workers, pouring money into the pockets of the people who own everything, yet do nothing?

What do you think?

You didn't come here to make the choice, you're here to understand why you made it.

He wouldn't last 2 days in the modern environment.

There is no way he could get insured with his ugly reputation on any big budget project. And no one would bother indulging his monster-sized narcissism as they can get very compliant, hard-working, ethical and HUMBLE actors from overseas (namely any major British drama school).

His lack of versatility and mannered style would keep him out of prestige TV as well as that's where the truly great actors reside these days and the standard is very high. Someone like Bryan Cranston or Michael Sheen would steam roll over him.

And there's the crazy demands for fitness these says (which requires strict dietary discipline).

In short, he wouldn't make it through the door and it would serve him right.

Agreed, Thats why modern actors are better

I think that this is because they are not pampered and the competition is very strong and varied (a special thanks to all the wonderful Brits that largely create it). It's such a tough environment to survive in that you can't afford to be lazy or a brat. Stars rise and fall very quickly. An actor might never work again just for SAYING something disagreeable, let alone pulling the sort of stunts that Brando did.

Brando became such a lazy, narcissistic monster thanks to everyone falling over themselves worshipping him undeservingly. He lived his entire life like a bratty child that used Hollywood and everything around him like his personal playpen. His case is a great psychological lesson about not indulging narcissists.

And it hasn't changed much: Tom Hardy has been touted as the greatest thing ever among modern actors and the new Brando for about 8 years. Guess what - it went to his head too. He's literally becoming a Brando by growing gradually intolerable to work with. At this rate he won't last long.

Yeah, i really prefer actors like Henry Fonda, a pure legend who wasnt at all like Brando

Yet you seem quite drawn to the object of your hate and jealousy. Marlon Brando pampered? I don't think so, toots. I didn't know the guy personally and neither did you yet you develop some strange illogical opinion based on image. Basically what you're doing is gossiping over a backyard fence about someone you seem to be extremely jealous of.

Todays actors are goats who pander to the same program that you are controlled by.

reply

There it is again: that silly logical fallacy in which a person is accused of "jealousy" because they criticized someone. It's an idiotic accusation that can't survive one second of rational consideration.

reply

He must've been pampered by all logic because he kept getting high profile work despite alienating most people in the industry and movie-goers for large chunks of his career. A modern actor with his behaviour pattern would simply not be employable consistently or insurable.

The reason I get so angry about Brando is that Brando fans never enter into logical discussions on why he deserved his status and refuse to look at the effects of celebrity marketing critically. It always comes down to emotional jabs and "he was great just because he was Brando". Which is what you're doing here. I swear, it's like a religion.

Give me some objective counter-arguments to everything I've listed and then you will have a leg to stand on. Imagine yourself as a modern casting director and tell me whether you'd gamble your job on hiring someone with Brando's reputation and fee demands against a ton of brilliant, modest and cheap British actors or even someone like Bryan Cranston.

reply

The problem with your logic is that it can no way be applied to an actor who did not and probably wouldn't participate in current media trends or politically correct manipulation tactics. As a female you lack the ability to view the world from a males stand point. In other words, you're basically an uninformed idiot trying to apply todays political control to a time when individuality, creative freedom and personal expression were considered a right and not a self destructive fault.

One more thing, I've never been a fan of anything or anyone.

100% correct.
I've lived in L.A. for almost ten years. One of the things that I hear time and again is that decades ago they would endure ass--les if they thought that they were brilliant-- writers, actors, directors, etc.
Today they kick your butt to the curb and find a replacement immediately if you are disrupting their TV show or movie.
Prime examples: Lindsey Lohan ("is she still alive?" exactly), Edward Furlong (ditto), etc.
