Any opinion on all the SNL business?? The Concert??? Anniversary show???

I watched the concert (SNL50: The Homecoming Concert) two nights ago.

The Anniversary show was on last night, watched it as well.

So how was it???

Eehh, just ok. Had a few moments. A lot of the concert was embarrassing. Some of the anniversary show was at about the same level. Old people trying to do comedy and music generally doesn't work.

I did enjoy the Nirvana reunion with Post Malone.

Going into the past during the Anniversary show was funny on occasion.

Enjoyed the run through of commercial parodies.

Didn't care for any of the sketches.

Overall, both programs, just ok.

Any other takes???

reply

I largely ignored it since the show is rarely funny anymore.

I tuned into SNL50 on Sunday a few times for a few seconds, heard a bad joke or bad music and quickly changed channels.

At most, I'll catch a sketch on YouTube if there's a consensus that it's worth watching.

Honestly, I'm surprised SNL has lasted this long and feel like it deserves it's own Channel at this point to show nothing but SNL over the 50 Years, good, bad or indifferent

reply

SNL where comedy goes to die

Signed, million man.

reply

It's been a while since I had so much interest in not watching something.

If someone were to say that show was funded by an evil mind control agency, I wouldn't dismiss the idea right away.

reply

Not even the concert program?

That one, I purposely watched it.

The Anniversary show - well, there really wasn't anything else on I wanted to watch. It was more - watch by attrition.

But again, the concert - this was a deliberate choice.

Aren't you one of the huge music people on this site? Maybe I'm thinking of someone else.

reply

Zero interest in anything they had to offer.

They could have reanimated Elvis and I still would not have watched it.

reply

LOL - good one.

Ok, gotcha.

Thanks for the reply.

That fact that far superior shows like SCTV, Kids in the Hall, Mad TV, In Living Color have faded while they remain, says something and I don't think it's good.

reply

Funny you say that - I was a huge fan of Mad Tv....

Especially the first couple of seasons, at that point, MAD TV was far superior to SNL.

Plus I didn't mind looking at Nicole SUllivan, LOL

Anyway, with SNL, it's been on and off. Last time I thought it was funny was the Kristen Wiig cast - which was , wow like 15 years ago now.

reply

And then you ask, how does an unfunny show last that long without some kind of assistance?

reply

It's a good question of which one has no answer.

No idea why SNL has lasted 50 years.

It certainly isn't because it's consistently funny.

reply

Its been on so long that creates a sort of geeze we hafta celebrate it - but 'it' is more-or-less 50 years of mediocrity, with occasional bursts of greatness. To me, its long out-lived its welcome, usefulness. They clearly don't hire and/or retain the best & brightest - it seems like a fat gouty old French king from the 18th century.

Totally agreed. It was cutting edge when it first came out - I don't know what you would call it now.

As I was just telling parkerbot, no clue as to why it has lasted as long it has.

ANyway - thanks for the response.
