5/10
I have an unintended connection to the actual Donna in this song. My stepdaughter married her grandson. He told my family the story of the song & his connection to her. My parents were in high school at the time & both remembered the song. She is still alive & well (2 years younger than my father). Someday I'll invest time watching LaBamba.
As for the song it is a bit sappy: 6/10.
Awesome! Yes, you definitely need to watch "La Bamba." I think it's a very good movie...as someone who's never been to Southern California, that movie really seemed to capture what living there must have been like during the late 1950s.
As for the song...I love it. 9/10 for me. A lot of people here don't seem to like 1950s music like I do. "The Day The Music Died," as Don McLean put it so well in his classic song "American Pie" (which he seemed to have written because he loved that era of music as well... great songwriter). RIP, Ritchie Valens.
I can appreciate a good 50s song even if it was years before my time. I read that Ritchie played Donna the song in a phone booth before he recorded it, similar to here:

Yes, Don McLean put it so well👍
Yes, I think you're right. I think there's a scene in "La Bamba" regarding that, if I remember correctly (I'm past due a re-watch of that movie myself). But anyway... with your family connection to Ritchie Valens, try to watch that movie when you can! 😃
