What did you watch this week sweetypie? (01/26-02/01)

My awesome week:

Pacific rim: Uprising (2018 Prime): Having enjoyed the first one very much, I knew it was wise to not precipitate myself towards this sequel. As I expected, they sucked most of the fun out of the first one and made it a “teenage” version. It was underwhelming but not totally bad. My rating: 5.5/10

Billy Elliot (2000 TV): Random fact; I still remember being at the videoclub with my parents and they tried to convince me on us choosing this movie and I always said no. Back then, I thought it would be corny and boring. At this time and point in my life, I expected it to be feel-good and uplifting. Turns out I found it quite sad, depressing and even somewhat vulgar. Another random fact; it’s rated R in the US but PG in Quebec. I don’t know how I would’ve reacted to this movie when I was 15. I think I would’ve liked it. At this point and time in my life, I appreciated it but wasn’t overly impressed or anything. My rating: 7/10

The fall guy (2024 Prime) A bit cheesy but there were definitely some great scenes. The one where Jody, the director, explains the story of the movie to Colt just after he was lit on fire was pretty funny. The fight scene in the club against the drug dealer’s goons was very cool. That’s just two examples. There were a few others that made this a charming enough and quite entertaining popcorn flick. If you leave your brain at the popcorn stand that is. Also, I’m really not a Gosling fan but I thought he was ok in this. I’m not big on Blunt either but she had enough chemistry with him. Too bad they made the whole thing last too long as it lost some of its effect by the third act. My rating: 7/10

Furiosa: A Mad Max saga (2024 DVD): Call me crazy but I slightly preferred the story in this one VS Fury road. The two hours went by pretty fast and the action was good but if I’m being honest, the special effects and CGI were at times a bit weak considering the budget and the reputation it has to live up to. Still, great fucking sequel. My rating: 8/10

Psycho Goreman (2022 DVD): Straight up one of my new favourite horror comedy. Loved it quite a lot. All of it. So much fun and filled with memorable moments and quotes. My rating: 8.5/10

Dark city (1998 DVD): Although I didn’t love it as much as I did the first time it still held up pretty well thanks to a very imaginative and captivating story. Just don’t watch it if you’re tired, I warn you. My rating: 7.5/10

The crow (1994 DVD): Violent, profound, spectacular and very sad. A great movie and a greater tragedy. My rating: 9/10

Bro, psycho Gorman should make you as proud to be Canadian as it made me! It’s a fantastic movie.

reply

Honestly, 9 times out of 10, if there is a good Canadian movie it's from Quebec.

reply

We do have some good ones. 👍

"Les ordres" is the GOAT. "Monsieur Lahzar", "Louis Cyr", "Mon Oncle Antoine", "Polytechnique", "Starbuck", and " La grande séduction" are all great.

reply

I remember you mentioning Les Ordres before and been on my list of ''movies to find'' since then.
Starbuck would be my fav of your list.

My ultimate favourite one is La Loi du cochon.

Some of my favs: Léolo, Le Marais, CRAZY, Maelstrom, 1981, Histoire d'Hivers, La guerre des tuques, Histoire de Pen, Dédé, à travers les brumes

Les Ordres is here but the quality could be better.

Ahoy!

"The Fall Guy" is on my list, and I'm sure my wife wants to watch "Furiosa" with me, but I'm not really interested. :D
(I have not seen the original Mad Max, either.)

This week I watched:

"Circle" (2015): This is a weird one, it's like a TV elimination reality, set inside an alien spaceship. Interesting concept inspired by "12 Angry Men". The execution is therefore minimalistic, but at 87 minutes runtime it's worth a watch. 6,5/10

"Solitary Man" (2009): I heard about this one from Jenna Fischer in the "Office Ladies" podcast. Well, it's also a strange movie, where you can't decide whether to root for the main character (a womanizer portrayed by Michael Douglas), or feel repulsed by him. One thing's for sure, Imogen Poots is in my opinion one of the most beautiful human beings. 5/10

"Unhinged" (2020): Now this is a pretty dumb movie about a road rage gone wrong. The fat Russel Crow is intimidating, but other characters and authorities make unrealistic decisions, so suspension of disbelief is needed. 6/10

"Trap" (2024): I like M. Night Shyamalan, and this one was also OK. It lacks the usual "hint of paranormal". The twist is revelaed early on, and after that it's a cat & mouse game. Like in "Solitary Man", you don't know who to root for, and like in "Unhinged", police is acting stupid. Anyway, I enjoyed it. 7,5/10

Started: "Do You Want to See a Dead Body" (2017). A surreal comedic YouTube series starring Rob Huebel. It's hilarious, if you like this kind of humour. I'll rate it when I'm through.

Unhinged: 6
Trap: 6.5

I’m curious to look into Do you want to see a dead body?. Thanks for the recommendation.

it's really a mindless comedy, don't expect anything based on the title.
although they managed to get a few big names to appear on screen (Justin Long for example).
episodes are about 10-20 mins long.

reply

The 3 Worlds of Gulliver on January 26
House of 1,000 Dolls on January 27
The Godsend on January 28
Island of the Blue Dolphins on January 30
A Complete Unknown on January 31
More Dead Than Alive on February 1

I saw A Complete Unknown at the theater.

Two Vincent Price movies (I unsuccessfully tried to watch another on the 29th which I couldn't find a good copy of so ordered a DVD) and four other movies.

Nice!

And glad to know there are still people ordering DVDs like me. 🍻

reply

I watched Mothers of Monsters or M.O.M after one of my coworkers recommended it.

It was shitty.

reply

Thesamoanjoke, Kowalski and I all enjoyed it. You have to appreciate low-budget though. I rated it 6.5/10

reply

Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) and some Star Trek:Next Generation episodes.

reply

I haven’t watched any of these.

reply

Everything okay, buddy?

Movies

-Love Kills (1991)
This movie looked so cheap. The acting by everybody, including Virginia Madsen, was awful and the bad editing and dialogue just made it worse. No suspense either and the ending was predictable (the red herrings were just silly).

TV Show

-Agatha Christie's Poirot - S1-Ep9+10

-Star Trek - marathon

reply

I’m good, thanks!

You review of Love kills so makes me want o not watch it. lol

reply
