Jam of the Day - Leonard Cohen - Everybody Knows

Okay, down to business. I got my Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi, and uh, I got my Black Jack gum here! And I got that feeling. Mmm, yeah that familiar feeling? That something rank is going on out there.

That is a great song - 10 million out of 10 - put that in your pipe and smoke it samoanjoes.

I love that line, "everybody knows the bad guys won."

reply

I'm glad you enjoyed it — it really is a banger. I wanted to introduce more people to Leonard Cohen. He's the man.

reply

Nice! It was time for another listen.

Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi, huh? I haven't seen a can of that in at least a decade. You truly are one of a kind, my friend.

The post is a reference to the movie Pump Up the Volume (1990) with Christian Slater. He plays a pirate radio DJ, Happy Harry Hardon, and that’s how he begins the first broadcast at the beginning of the movie. He always starts his shows with Leonard Cohen’s Everybody Knows.

That makes more sense. The gum in particular should have been a give away there.

I haven't seen that. Looks like I've got another movie on my watch list.

reply

I highly recommend the movie. It beautifully captures that transitional moment when the 80s were ending, but the 90s hadn’t quite begun.

And you can still get BlackJack gum:

Damn, thank you, Kowalski! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I was worried no one would catch the reference, but I really wanted to introduce more people to Leonard Cohen. And of course, once they asked me about the meaning of my post, I’d use the chance to introduce them to Happy Harry Hard-On.

Fill the air. Steal it! Keep the air alive!

SOMEONE SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME PIRATE RADIO WOULD BE A FIGMENT OF THE PAST BEFORE I WAS OLD ENOUGH TO BROADCAST....BROKEN DREAMS.😢

Seeing you two getting along fills me with joy.

We were once good friends, and I still consider him a friend, but over time, our differing political views and temperaments caused us to drift apart. Kowalski spends most of his time in the General Board, where as I live primarily on the Politics board. I just visit here every once in a while to say hello to everyone.

reply

I had no idea and I sometimes forget that you were inquiring before you became curious. You and Bloodshot are friends too so that makes some sense actually.

Broadcasters were replaced by Podcasters. Progress, amirite?

reply

This tune has been a recurrent earworm of mine for many years. It's like an old friend at this point. I love the cynicism and fatalism of it. Best lines:

Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows
