IMDb CEO steps down ( criticism includes ending message boards)

Amid criticism, IMDb founder, Col Needham, steps down from CEO position after 35 years.
Criticism includes disbanding message boards and launching redesign.

The boards were one of the main reasons I went to that site, and ending them is how I found MovieChat. They probably didn't want some of the content ruining their squeaky clean image, which likely was a risk for anyone that might advertise.

Keeping the boards was a no brainer for me, as I am sure it drove fan traffic. But perhaps they cared more about the corporate and content provider side of the business.

Changing of the guard happens all the time, so there's no panic here.

The boards were the only reason I ever went to the site. I probably visit IMDB a few times a year now. For filmography and movie information I just use wikipedia.

Yap, same! I spend like a total of 2 minutes checking tv show episodes nowadays. Mostly just that.

Message boards were great imo for having boards for old stuff.

Like say you just watched a 40-50 year old movie for the first time or finally watched that old show that everybody's been recommending. You'd almost always find someome to "chat'' with about it.

I like Moviechat but a lot of boards are dead!

reply

For sure. That's the problem with this site, the film and TV boards are practically vacate. Need more traffic!

reply

CEO. We need a Luigi.

reply

Long Live Luigi.
Remember, if you end up on the jury, the verdict is not guilty.

Good riddance.
I left IMDb after it shut down the message boards. I had contributed significantly to the site, creating over 100 creative polls, but I stopped completely after feeling betrayed with them shut down the boards. I briefly returned to creating polls after some users here piss me off. However, I stopped again as soon as I realized they had ruined the lists with the redesign. Every change this site makes seems to destroy something valuable. It truly takes a unique kind of talent to ruin so many good features.

To illustrate just how terrible the list redesign is: there’s no option to press enter. I’m not joking—this basic functionality, available in every forum on earth, doesn’t work on IMDb!

I really hope people didn't buy the B#$@@#t about they shut down the boards because of the trolls.

At least I make my little subtle revenge on Col in one of my last polls in the site:

I also created a list that make fun of IMDb shut down the boards:
