What did you watch on this final week of 2024? (12/22-12/28)

I was in vacation and watched a lot of movies!

Kinds of kindness (2024): Lanthimos is a director I wish I could say I love but unfortunately, he’s a hit-and-miss with me. This one here makes the list of the ones I enjoyed from him. It consist of three different stories all starring the same actors.
The first story made total sense to me and I was not lost or confused so I was able to appreciate it. It was original to say the least. 7.5/10
The second story was very strange and I’m really not sure what it was about but it was fun anyways. 7/10
For the third story I knew what was happening, it had a solid storyline, it was very peculiar and very captivating. 8.5/10
Overall, it brought us in a bright and colourful universe filled with shady and unique characters slowly going about their lives, drinking water, alcohol and getting naked (amongst other things) in a hypnotic and mesmerizing kind of unforgettable way. BTW, the ending credits clocks in at exactly 2h37 minutes. My rating: 7,66667/10

Anora (2024): This movie is literally split in half for me; I probably disliked the first hour as much as I enjoyed the second one. For the first half, there were many scenes with the rich kid (Sean Baker why did you make me sit through so many scenes with this guy? 😢 ). His scenes gave me a fever dream of what GTA 6 would look like if they created the worst character possible. Worst thing is, I’m pretty sure at some point in the movie he’s playing GTA. You know that scene just before he rams the prostitute on his couch for 3 and a half seconds? One of the 22 times he had sex with her? Call me crazy but I think I’d rather see William Dafoe and Emma Stone’s sex scene rather than this here. Suffice it to say, I got bored rather quickly of seeing this rich kid chilling and busting nuts with the lead girl. So many nuts. 🤢 Their Las Vegas wedding also made me a little sick to my stomach . Then they had cringe romantic walks and dinners. Then they boom-boom skeet-skeet again on a white fur carpet . Urgh… But then we get 1 hour into the film and yes, as many people said, it goes into Uncut gem territory. Uncut gem was a better movie than this but let me say something though: the Russian bald guy with the hoodie was one of my favourite criminal character of all time. Overall, I smiled (ex: the red ribbon during the “5 minute walk” followed by the towing or the drunk guy with the broken nose). I also laughed (ex: when the girl who just got married is asked where her lover could be hiding and she says: “ I don’t know… He likes video games. He might be at the arcade.” or the puke scene in the car.) Anyways I don’t know if I’m the only one, but I think she should’ve given up way earlier and she seemed desperate for this kid. Overall, I rate both halves: 6 and 8 out of 10. My rating: 7/10

Shazam: Fury of the Gods (2023 DVD): Not as endearing as the first one but still has a good enough cast and fun enough action and FX for it to be worthy of a watch. The story is a bit dumb and ll over the place (take a magic stick, an apple, 3 goddesses, a dragon and a few unicorns, toss them around a little and you’ll find yourself with the plot for this) but again, it’s just an excuse to have awesome action and see these actors bring watch life into these typical characters. My main gripe is how they wrote the now older Billy/Shazam: he seems as immature as sever and his adult/kid personas don’t even match each other. Weird. My rating: 6.5/10

The driller killer (1979 TV): Playful. That’s not a word you would want to use to qualify this movie. Nor could you say that it’s your standard serial killer or usual slasher flick. Sleazy Grindhouse. Now these are good words. You could also say it’s repulsively riveting or disgustingly delightful. It’s dark, it’s trash and pretty unique. My rating: 7/10

Now you see me 2 (2016 TV): I see these movies as the fast and furious version of the heist genre. I’m just curious to see how far they’re gonna bring it and they do stretch the elastic of realism. As I expected, it wasn’t amazing. I even wonder if it’s really worth making a sequel hence and the reason I waited 8 years to see it. Thankfully, there is a formidably splendid cast to make it somewhat entertaining. My rating: 5.5/10

Elf (2003 DVD): First time for my kids to see it. This means that in my household, this is not considered a Christmas classic. Still, it was appreciated by all. As for me, this was maybe my 4th or 5th watch. Always fun but yeah, doesn’t measure up to my Christmas favourites. My rating: 7/10

Cuckoo (2024 Prime): I enjoyed the ride but the destination, not so much. I liked the settings, the designs, the lighting and even the wardrobe department did a good job. The movie definitely looks good but the story… WTF? I don’t even know man, it was weird. Fun for one viewing but don’t see myself revisiting that one. My rating: 6/10

Exhuma (2024 DVD): I wouldn’t have guessed that a movie about a coffin would have so much going on….

Exhuma (2024 DVD): I wouldn’t have guessed that a movie about a coffin would have so much going on. Or was it two coffins? Maybe it was three. That’s pretty much all this is here movie was about; coffins. Actually, that’s not really true, it was also about pigs, chickens, foxes and fishes. That being said, it wasn’t bad. Basically, the story is an entire argument about why being buried is a way better option than being cremated. Before this movie I was thinking 60% cremation VS 40% dirt wormed. After this movie I’m like 50/45. He! I would give this movie a higher rating if it was not meandering and a bit messy in the second half but it was definitely an interesting watch. My rating: 7/10

Last Straw (2023) 6.5/10 A small town killing spree lands on the doorstep of a rural diner, where a young waitress must fight for her life over the course of one long night.

There's nothing really new here, but the actors are good, and it's very short. So I'd say it's worth a look.

Dexter Original Sin (2024) episodes 1-4 ....6/10
Not really impressed so far with this. The cast seems really boring and the writing just seems like we've seen this so many times.

Cuckoo 4/10. I couldn't really connect to any of the characters in this and the plot seemed really uninteresting.

reply

I dropped Dexter after season 2 and have no interest in going back.

reply

I might have seen Radio flyer but can’t remember it.

I wasn’t aware the other 2 Mel Gibson movies even existed!

reply

At this rate, they may be my last movies for some time. I'm taking the year off of TV and movies.

reply

An entire year!! Shit…

Obviously, you don’t have 858 movies on your current watchlist!

reply

Nope. My watch list is movies I watched with you guys. I don't add anything anymore because the industry moved into other people's interest.

I'll probably focus on reading and camping instead.

PleasantVille 7.5/10

Violent night: This movie gave me a good fuzzy feeling. There’s something about watching John Leguizamo shoot at a rich ass Christmas tree with machine gun that just warms my blood. I’m like that. Then there were many more joyful moments and the fun was not only found in the violence but also in the sweet heartfelt relationship between Santa and the little girl or the mystery floating between rich momma and her children while held hostages in the living room. A merry good time. If, like me, you’re a fan of this film you ought to get the collector’s edition DVD; the deleted scenes and bonuses are adding a lot to the whole experience. 8/10

Paranormal Activity: 6/10

The ref: 6.5/10

Christmas vacation: 8/10

Scream 3: 7.5/10

Paranormal Activity: 5.5/10

I bought a copy of The planet of the apes in order to force myself to watch is as I’ve seen all the remakes. Still haven’t got around to it.

Hunger games: 6/10

The Martian: 8/10

Star Wars Episode IX: 7/10

reply

Ok, let us know what you think about the movie.
For me the "Hunger Games " would have a solid 7,5/10.

reply

Last night I binge watched all 4 episodes of "La Palma".
Fairly unreal how all of the main characters in the series survived, but the special effects are nicely done.

reply

Looks interesting, thanks!

Christmas already???

Movies

-Enemy of the State (1998)
Watched this because it has a bit of a Christmas theme. Excellent, suspenseful action thriller. I just wish at times that Bruckheimer would've left his OTT shtick out of it, because the movie could've been smarter.

-Sissi (1955)
A Christmas classic over here in Europe. Pretty much a fairy tale version of a much darker true life story.

-Home Alone (1990)
Christmas classic all over the world. No more needs to be said.

-The NeverEnding Story (1985)
Childhood classic, I just wish they would drop the synthesizer music for the classical German soundtrack.

-Lady on a Train (1945)
Noir murder mystery comedy that takes place around Christmas. It starts out okay, but halfway loses focus, because the movie is not much more than just an idea.

-Last Action Hero (1993)
This movie just can't make up its mind. Is it a violent satire of action movies or a kiddie adventure movie? It could've worked, but it just doesn't.

-I Saw What You Did (1988)
TV movie time! This one sucked. I haven't seen the original with Joan Crawford (yet), but this movie takes a pretty simple concept and turns it into something complicated and boring. It also proves that having two Carradines doesn't improve your movie.

TV Shows

-Merry Christmas, Mr. Bean
Yearly tradition.

-Blackadder's Christmas Carol
Yearly tradition.

-Mickey's Christmas Carol
Yearly tradition.

Femme (2023) 9/10 Most of the reviews for this said it was extremely tense And that was absolutely true. You feel like you're holding your breath through the whole movie.
