Do any of you like J-horror? Which ones?

Hello everyone.

Was just looking for some good j-horror suggestions. Everyone is familiar with "the grudge" and "the ring", they're fairly decent movies yet not that appealing to me. I liked the grudge when i was in high school, but I tried the series recently, and it just wasn't scary anymore.

I really like "Pulse" just for certain scenes, even though it's a little slow and disjointed at times. Also, I think it says some pretty deep things about computers and technology.

Which j-horrors are worth watching, they certainly making one reflect on some interesting and different ideas about ghosts in Japanese culture.

Well, if you like Pulse, then other Kiyoshi Kurosawa films are worth checking out -- Cure, Retribution, Creepy.

If you're interested in different ideas about ghosts in Japanese culture: Kwaidan, Kuroneko, Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees, The Ghost of Yotsuya,

Other Japanese horror films I'd recommend: Horrors of Malformed Men, Demons, A Page of Madness, Blind Beast, Onibaba, Tetsuo: The Iron Man, House, Perfect Blue.

That's all I got right now.

I prefer K horror.

Do you need ghosts? For j-horror I like One Cut of the Dead, Audition, House (1977), Infection (2004), Long Dream, and Matango.

If you like K horror and ghosts, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum was well done. The Wailing is fantastic. The Closet (2020) was pretty good too.

Just thought of another one. Hair Extensions was an interesting watch.

reply

Sion Sono is a lunatic. But that is the creepiest film about killer hair extensions I'm ever likely to see.

You've reminded me that I probably should have recommended his Tag and Suicide Club too... although these films are a bit 'cult'. I dunno. There's so much variety in the horror genre that -- Japanese or not -- it's hard to know someone's tastes.

reply

Tag was good. I haven't seen Suicide Club yet but it's on my list.

I like some Indonesian horror too. I liked May the Devil Take You, and Suzzanna (2018)

reply

Nah I don't need ghosts, but they are an interesting psychology idea. I personally am not a believer, only in the sense that we are always haunted by the past.

Audition (1999) Japanese horror at its finest.

reply

- Ju-on (The Grudge)
- Audition
- A Tale of Two Sisters
- One Missed Call
- Dark Water
- Ringu
- Dumplings

The Thai movie industry has churned out some terrifying flicks too: -

- Shutter
- Meat Grinder
- The Eye

reply
