What did you bumfuzzles watch this week? (11/10-11/16)

Me:

Slaughter high (1986 Tubi) : There were some pretty funny lines in this one but also some of the most poorly lit scenes I have ever seen. The story takes a bit of time to get going and was surprisingly tame for a while but the second half had its fair share of fucked up and crazy kills. The special effects were good. It maybe wasn’t as fun as I hoped it would be but it was better than SOME made it sound like. The killer’s mask was cool, the last 10 minutes were not disappointing at all and you know what? I love the title they picked for the movie too. My rating: 6/10

C’est arrivé près de chez vous (1992 “Man bites dig”): Right off the first conversation of the movie, when he explains the weight to add to a corpse before dumping it in the river, I was both shocked and laughing pretty hard. Great combination. (spoilers and sensible information: if you are curious, he says things like “the weight to add to a standard adult corpse is about 3 times its weight. For kids, dwarves and seniors it’s different though, their bones are not at the same stage.” Later in the movie he also kills an old lady by hearth attack. He literally scared her to death. ) The lead was stupefying in his role of the killer and the secondary actors were plain formidable to watch also. I liked their French Belgian accent. I was never bored but would’ve like to get a little bit more out of the final act. A review I like: “This spoof fly-on-the-wall documentary is funny, scary, provocative, and profoundly disturbing...Purely on a gut level, it may offend; but as an exploration of voyeurism, it's one of the most resonant, caustic contributions to the cinema of violence since Peeping Tom.” My rating: 8/10

The lawnmower man (1992 Director’s cut): A 2h20 sci-fi about an autistic man who mows lawn and read comics until he plays one video game too many and becomes a super-human. Can someone say masterpiece? Ok, maybe not. But I can sure say cult classic! My rating: 7.5/10

Welcome to the jungle (2013 Prime): I laughed a few times but the story kind of sucked and there was a lot of cheese. A lot! Still, for my guys Van Damme and Brody, I feel generous and will round my rating up to 6/10.

No one will save you (2023 Disney+): Very good movie with great acting and solid special effects. The story generated so interesting conversations within the group. Check out the podcast to hear them! My rating: 7.5/10

I have not watched any movies on my own this week....instead, I have been watching season 4 of Shameless (Us version). I love this show and will be continuing watching it :)

That’s my girl! 🙌

I have never been able to watch Shameless. My wife, my sister and my sisters in law all loved it but something about a failure of a husband/father/man just turned me off.

I could not look at William H. Macy in that condition. He seemed like trash and I hold him in high regard.

Check out Yellowstone, it’s really great👍

Hello, fellow bumfuzzle!

The Lawnmower Man Directors Cut (1992) - Fond memories of seeing this on the SciFi Channel during one lazy Saturday afternoon, I was enthralled with the journey of a simple landscaper named Jobe who gets roped into an experiment that unlocks his full potential. This movie is downright goofy at times, but it manages to work thanks to a mystical reverence towards VR and computer science in general. Jeff Fahey is a revelation! 8.5

Welcome to the Jungle (2013) - This might have worked had it chosen a particular angle - Van Damme's character bringing out the survivalist in Adam Brody's, the office culture spin on Lost/Lord of the Flies, or maybe even the hallucinatory aspect that some of the characters experienced. It ended up being undercooked with several disparate elements. 5.5

No One Will Save You (2023) - A wonderful surprise of calculated visual storytelling. While the story is ultimately very straightforward, there's something to be said about a familiar yarn being presented in a fresh, engaging way. 7.5

Also this week:

The Wolfman (2010) - A solid and surprisingly effective spin on the classic Universal horror character. 7

The Twilight Girls (1957) - Stumbled across this lovely discovery on a whim, and I found it a delightful teenage melodrama with some very edgy and salacious elements for the time. Definitely French! 7

The Bikeriders (2023) - Studiously crafted atmosphere in search of a narrative. 5.5

Movies

-As Good as Dead (1995)
From the get-go this movie does not take the most logical road to get where it wants to go. And again, the twist was so obvious, it was mindboggling none of the characters figured things out sooner. I'm sure you like Judge Reinhold, Stone-K, but I always found him to be a goofy-faced stoner who certainly can't play villainous.

TV shows

-Dynasty - marathon
Finished season 3. I don't care what some of the fans say, but despite the storylines becoming more soapy and absurd, season 3 was less annoying and far better written and entertaining than season 2.

-The Cosby Show - marathon

reply

I’d love to be there to see how you get about picking your movies to watch.

“There’s a few options in front of us but let’s go with that obscur 1995 thriller starring that goofy-faced stoner. I mean, why not!!!”

😝

reply

Lol, yeah, pretty much like that.😆

reply

I’ve watched some of our MCMC stuff but I’m currently marathoning Yellowstone on Peacock. Gosh, I forgot how much I liked Kevin Costner, the guy is a superstar.

Also, there is a cool show on TUBI called ‘Under Arrest.’
It’s basically the RCMP Canadian version of ‘Cops.’
Alcohol seems to be involved in nearly every arrest. You Canadians need to calm down😄

reply

Added Under arrest to my watchlist. Thank you!

reply

It's got the most brainless and stupid opening theme of all time, sort of a dime store metal band shouting the same line over and over again LOL.

YOU ARE UNDER ARREST
YOU ARE UNDER ARREST
YOU ARE UNDER ARREST
YOU ARE UNDER ARREST!

Not exactly The Beatles or Zeppelin level lyrics but the show is pretty good.
It certainly smashes the sweet, polite Canadian stereotype. Goddam, much of Canada seems like South Yonkers!

Blitz - (2024)

Steve McQueen's latest. Not reckoned too highly by some of his fans but I enjoyed it, especially the second half which grew darker with a swerve into Oliver Twist territory. Pleasing too, to see a UK war film generally negative of the powers that be (eg they fail to open the underground shelters claiming 'regulations' for those crowds seeking a haven from the bombs, a real historical disgrace), while the racism, a common concern with McQueen, is not too heavy handed in explication.

Sugarfoot (50's TV western series)

After just finishing binge watching The Texan and Tombstone Territory, 2 other contemporaneous series, Sugarfoot took a while to adjust to, as the hero is anti-violence and a gauche player in the old West to boot. Episodes are pretty uniform in quality, but being made by Warners the guest villains and love interests each week are a change. Its the sort of thing that grows on one, but I still won't abandon those heroes more ready with their guns...

Annihilation 2018 - Fan edit

Second time of watching this, a tale of enigmatic alien invasion, hoping perhaps I would like it more. The fan edit was seamless, but the film still suffers from a lack of focus with a confused ending even with the amendments. Some claim it is subtle and it is good to leave the viewer to make his or her mind up as to what it all means. I just found it lazy. Not your usual SF story though.

Hallow'een - Fan Edit

A version of the film that I have seen several times which introduces scenes included for TV showings. Most of these occur in the first half (notably a long opening scene with Loomis arguing his case for Myer's continued imprisonment and then a look at Myer's room). I quite liked the extra material, but it does make things slower until the killings start.

The Bravados 1958

A revenge western, starring Gregory Peck. Steven Boyd, Lee Van Cliff, Joan Collins. I usually find Peck a bit stolid but am a sucker for Westerns. This one, directed by Henry King is one of his better efforts, as Peck plays an implacable hunter of the men he thinks raped and murdered his wife. I saw a great 'scope print. Best scene is the one where Van Cleef is begging for his life on his knees in the long grass. The only thing I found tedious was the eventual injection of religion into proceedings when Peck could haven ended up more tormented that he started. Rather than Peck, I personally would have preferred Widmark for this sort of thing.

Bad Genius (2017)

A Netflix film though I got my copy through a torrent. I normally like Korean and Japanese movies but couldn't get into this K tale of academic cheating and its consequences. It was well done but perhaps I just wasn't in the mood. May give it second try in due course.

best film seen so far this year

Sorry Hollywood, but nothing I have seen of yours of late can match Jallikattu (2019) an Indian Malayalam-language independent 'action thriller survival film' In the film, a bull escapes from a slaughterhouse in a hilly remote village and the villagers set out to hunt it down. The hunt reveals greed and an escalating situation of violence, and hysteria and absurdity. Ultimately it is not the cow which is out of control, but the absurdity of human nature shown in the mob. If you enjoyed the crescendo of irrationality of Aronofsky's Mother! (2017) say, then this is the film for you.

A trailer as, absurdly the whole thing is not on YouTube.

Annihilation: Trailer looked amazing! Movie was meh. 5.5/10

I never heard about Jallikattu but you comparing it to Mother! Just brought it way up on my list. Might even watch it this week.

Thank you!

reply

No problem. It is the escalating chaos which brought the two together in my mind although Jallikattu imho is the better controlled of the two, if that make sense. J. can be got by torrent. Mother! is just.... gob-smackingly over the top, I think the director lets things get away from him, but great fun none the less.

reply

J is available for me in Prime.

Aronofsky is my all time favourite director and he’s yet to make a movie I didn’t love.
Even Noah.
