What did you bumfuzzles watch this week? (11/10-11/16)

Me:

Slaughter high (1986 Tubi) : There were some pretty funny lines in this one but also some of the most poorly lit scenes I have ever seen. The story takes a bit of time to get going and was surprisingly tame for a while but the second half had its fair share of fucked up and crazy kills. The special effects were good. It maybe wasn’t as fun as I hoped it would be but it was better than SOME made it sound like. The killer’s mask was cool, the last 10 minutes were not disappointing at all and you know what? I love the title they picked for the movie too. My rating: 6/10

C’est arrivé près de chez vous (1992 “Man bites dig”): Right off the first conversation of the movie, when he explains the weight to add to a corpse before dumping it in the river, I was both shocked and laughing pretty hard. Great combination. (spoilers and sensible information: if you are curious, he says things like “the weight to add to a standard adult corpse is about 3 times its weight. For kids, dwarves and seniors it’s different though, their bones are not at the same stage.” Later in the movie he also kills an old lady by hearth attack. He literally scared her to death. ) The lead was stupefying in his role of the killer and the secondary actors were plain formidable to watch also. I liked their French Belgian accent. I was never bored but would’ve like to get a little bit more out of the final act. A review I like: “This spoof fly-on-the-wall documentary is funny, scary, provocative, and profoundly disturbing...Purely on a gut level, it may offend; but as an exploration of voyeurism, it's one of the most resonant, caustic contributions to the cinema of violence since Peeping Tom.” My rating: 8/10

The lawnmower man (1992 Director’s cut): A 2h20 sci-fi about an autistic man who mows lawn and read comics until he plays one video game too many and becomes a super-human. Can someone say masterpiece? Ok, maybe not. But I can sure say cult classic! My rating: 7.5/10

Welcome to the jungle (2013 Prime): I laughed a few times but the story kind of sucked and there was a lot of cheese. A lot! Still, for my guys Van Damme and Brody, I feel generous and will round my rating up to 6/10.

No one will save you (2023 Disney+): Very good movie with great acting and solid special effects. The story generated so interesting conversations within the group. Check out the podcast to hear them! My rating: 7.5/10

I SHOULD LOVE THIS...TAKE THE OFFICE AND MAROON THEM ON AN ISLAND WITH VAN DAMME AND SOME INSANITY....THIS MOVIE CHASES IT'S OWN TAIL THOUGH....DEVELOPING NO STAKES AND RELAXING IN THE VALLEY OF DRUG BINGES AND MUD ORGIES....THEN A MAN FLIES AND THE CREDITS ROLL.....VAN DAMME IS THE WHOLE SHOW AND HE IS UNDERUSED.

Hello, fellow bumfuzzle!

The Lawnmower Man Directors Cut (1992) - Fond memories of seeing this on the SciFi Channel during one lazy Saturday afternoon, I was enthralled with the journey of a simple landscaper named Jobe who gets roped into an experiment that unlocks his full potential. This movie is downright goofy at times, but it manages to work thanks to a mystical reverence towards VR and computer science in general. Jeff Fahey is a revelation! 8.5

Welcome to the Jungle (2013) - This might have worked had it chosen a particular angle - Van Damme's character bringing out the survivalist in Adam Brody's, the office culture spin on Lost/Lord of the Flies, or maybe even the hallucinatory aspect that some of the characters experienced. It ended up being undercooked with several disparate elements. 5.5

No One Will Save You (2023) - A wonderful surprise of calculated visual storytelling. While the story is ultimately very straightforward, there's something to be said about a familiar yarn being presented in a fresh, engaging way. 7.5

Also this week:

The Wolfman (2010) - A solid and surprisingly effective spin on the classic Universal horror character. 7

The Twilight Girls (1957) - Stumbled across this lovely discovery on a whim, and I found it a delightful teenage melodrama with some very edgy and salacious elements for the time. Definitely French! 7

The Bikeriders (2023) - Studiously crafted atmosphere in search of a narrative. 5.5
