I ATE IT...I AM CONVICED 100%....ALIENS WERE REAL AND SHE WAS FUCKED UP ENOUGH AND FOUGH BACK ENOUGH THAT THEY MADE HER A SPECIAL CASE.

“I became pretty convinced that the whole thing was in her mind and that essentially the main character was having some sort of psychotic break due the trauma she carried from killing her friend all those years ago. The “aliens” attacking her were essentially all the guilt coming to the surface and her being forced to deal with it. I mean, look, she kills the first alien in pretty much the same way she killed her friend, Maude. And I thought there was a certain exaggerated surreality in the way the town outright hated her and I began to regard her as an “unreliable narrator”. I took the ending to be that she finally was forced to confront what she had done (in her psychotic break, this presented itself as the alien-forced flashback) and because of this she then developed a different narrative of the world around her. And in the forest she literally/metaphorically kills her “old self”. So now, instead of living in a town that exaggeratedly despises her it swings completely the other way and they now hyperbolically adore her. If you look at the street where they dance at the end it’s done up like her lounge room as if she’s, in reality, just dancing around in there, but somehow believing she’s in a street party with the town that now loves and forgives her. This made more sense to me than it just being a straight alien invasion movie, but I know that’s what the director has said it is. Anyhoo…just my take on it.”
