What did you watch on this first week of November? (11/03-11/09)

My week:

Rampage (2018 DVD): This is perfectly light popcorn entertainment. I watched it with my kids over at my parents place and at first my mother didn’t want to join in so I told her to at least watch the first 15 minutes with us to give the movie a chance and she ended up watching it all with us. She even said she liked it, as we all did. My rating: 6.5/10

Deadpool and Wolverine (2024 Blu-ray): What a fucking blast that was! Even if not much happened overall it went by super fast and was never boring. Even if most fights lacked any sense of peril or danger they were always entertaining. My favourite part being the one with Electra, Blade and Gambit. The main reason is because Gambit was my favourite X-men back when I read the comic books and collected the trading cards. I was always frustrated by how little we get to see from him in X-men films so I was stoked to see him with more screen time here. I complained a lot in the recent years about how Marvel movies are often too long, well, believe it nor not, I was kind of sad when this one was over and would’ve gladly enjoyed if it was 20 minutes longer. My rating: 8.5/10

Funhouse massacre (2015 Tubi): Did I enjoy it as much as the first time? Nop. Do I feel like watching it a third time in the futur? Not really. Will I keep my same rating? Yes. Because I’m aware that it good enough for what it sets out to do and the gore is fun. My rating: 6/10

Hot Fuzz (2008 DVD): A comedy classic and a fan favourite of the MovieClub, this movie aged very well and was still entertaining for me on the more watch. One of the best buddy cop movie ever. My rating: 9/10

Tower heist (2011 Tubi): The casting on this one is frickin’ amazing! I much preferred it on rewatch and enjoyed the story this time around. Not the funniest film but very entertaining nonetheless. My rating: 7/10

Little evil (2017 Netflix): Somewhat enjoyable but ultimately disappointing as I expected way more out of it. Okay for one viewing. My rating: 6/10

3. Dug Up- 4.5/10- hot chicks, stupid rednecks, and zombies. Not bad.
4. Waking Ned Divine -9/10- it's brilliant and a good choice to watch with the in-laws.
5. Tower Heist-6.5/10- good cast, fun premise, and good music.
6. Love at Stake-5/10- it tries to be like Airplane or Screwballs.its fine.
7. Transilvania 6-5000-4.5/10- it's bad. It's also memorable with some great costumes and banter. Geena Davis was wonderful to see.

Waking Ned Divine is on my list but hard to find.
«  it's brilliant and a good choice to watch with the in-laws. » Yeah, because it’s not too long. ;)

Hall pass: It’s been a while. « Funny but not great » sounds about right. 6/10

It's kind of like Shine. You can't find that movie as well anymore. It's awesome.

I watched:

Challengers (Luca Guadagnino, 2024) -- I thought it took too long to get where it was going and I found it very difficult to care about any of these people. But the tennis scenes are well-shot and overall it was alright. 3 / 5

Love Lies Bleeding (Rose Glass, 2024) -- Enjoyably pulpy thriller 4 / 5

36 Filette (1988), Nocturnal Uproar (1979), and Anatomy of Hell (2004) -- all by Catherine Breillat. If you've seen any of her work -- Fat Girl for example -- you know what her themes are and that she likes to push boundaries and make you uncomfortable. She does it very well, Anatomy of Hell being the hardest of the three to watch... I've never been sure quite how I feel about her stuff. Each one 3 / 5.

Whistle Down the Wind (Bryan Forbes, 1961) -- some kids find a fugitive in a barn and mistake him for the Messiah. 'It's not Jesus, it's just some fella.' First saw it when I was a kid. Still stands up. Very charming. 4 / 5

The Substance (Coralie Fargeat, 2024) -- Second time with this. It's just an absolute blast... if you're that way inclined. Everyone mentions Cronenberg as a comparison -- and he is directly referenced -- but there's also a lot of Society in it and maybe some Re-Animator and even some Basket Case. It's more fun than Cronenberg. Anyway: 5 / 5.

Punch-Drunk Love (PT Anderson, 2002) -- Still my favourite PT Anderson film. 5 / 5.

High Potential 7/10 (Hulu) episodes 1-3 2024 This is one of those detective series where the main character has some ridiculous skill that's not possible, but I love it.

These can turn out to be great shows. Psych being a prime example

Movies

-Murder 101 (1991)
The movie started out as a decent TV thriller movie, but halfway it got so absurd, it was obvious there was going to be some ridiculous twist which was even worse than I thought. The finale had a totally different tone than the first half of the movie. Just stupid. Also, Pierce Brosnan always seems to play himself.

TV shows

-Dynasty - marathon

-The Cosby Show - marathon

Wow, this has to be one of his most obscur film.

Also, fun coincidence; remember last week you mentioned Jeff Fahey? This week you mention Brosnan and last Friday the MCMC watched The lawnmower man, starring those 2 guys. Life eh!?

reply

Yeah, I realized that when I typed it out.

Did you watch the movie because I mentioned it or is it just a coincidence?
