What did you heaven raisers watch this week? (10/27-11/02)
My week:
Diary of the dead (2007 Tubi): The actors were pretty bad with Michelle Morgan, the lead Canadian actress with the black hair, being the worst of all. She almost ruined every single scene where she had to talk. Urgh, I hated her. Her narration was awful too. Another thing that was dumb was at the beginning of her narration when she says “I added scary music, because I want you to be scared, so you don’t do the same mistakes as we did”. I didn’t like the way she said that and it’s just plain stupid. The dialogues were terribly weak but sometimes it was funny. Not even unintentionally, like Samuel the Amish guy, that was pretty funny. I was surprised to catch myself laughing a few times. Some dialogue was just plain cringe like when they arrive at a big mansion and old dude says: “ it looks like something God would’ve built, only if he had the money…” I mean wtf? Most of the characters were annoying and some of their actions were plain dumb but let’s not forget we’re dealing with a horror film here. The found footage format was well used I think and there were plenty of good zombie horror moments. The Special effects were not bad either. Some solid gore in there. That’s cool. I also appreciated that it takes place in October, that’s cool too. I’m giving it a generous 5/10 for the gore and violence.
The Addams family (1991 Netflix): I’ve seen bits and parts of this classic many times in my life but never really felt interested in watching it. Having just watched Wednesday, now was the perfect time. It did take me maybe 20 minutes to really get into it but after that it was truly enjoyable. I only knew Raul Julia for his role of Mr. Bison in Street fighter but reading that he passed softly after these films made me sad. He shone bright like a start as the family Addams padre. It seemed like Lloyd had a blast too and their chemistry was awesome. My rating: 7/10
All hallows eve 2 (2015 Tubi): You quickly realize that this is not from the same director as the first one and Art the clown is not there. Once you get past this disappointment you then realize the first short is kind of cool, the 2nd one is pretty bad, then the third one is even worse, fourth one is still bad, next one was extra lame, the one after that was crap also….They were all bad. The one with Mister Tricker was kind of cool too but lasted like 5 minutes. My rating: 3/10
Teen wolf (1985 Tubi): First time seeing this. It wasn’t bad at all. My favourite character was the coach. His lines were all great and the way he delivered them was hilarious. He gave the worst advices and that was very funny. I really wish we’d seen him more. The there’s the very energetic but never annoying Stiles, a solid sidekick to our teen wolf. The story was alright with the end being extra cheesy. The worst part was the soundtrack. Sometimes I truly wondered what was up with the sound as it felt awkward, loud and misplaced. My rating: 6.5/10
Look away (2018 Friday night special): I could split this movie in two halves: the first 45 minutes were really well done, created a perfectly uncomfortable atmosphere and the cast was pretty good. The story and mirror gimmick managed to captivate me and I was really looking forward to what would be in store for us for the second half. That’s where it lost lots of its effectiveness for me. The tension building up led to weak conclusions and the story brought us to rather trite, expected and banal places. Could’ve been so much better. My rating: 5.5/10
Coco (2017 Late night special): This one was beautiful to look at and offers a moving story. Was I hooked 100%? No. I don’t know what’s up with great animation movies and the MCMC but it’s just a weird fit. I’m so used to gore, horror, sex, trash and b-movies that it might be too much of a change of pace. My rating: 7/10
Suicide kings (1997 Saturday night special): This one had been on my list for a long time so I was happy to finally see it. There were more high than lows but it was uneven and a tad too long over complicated. I’m not sure I’d rewatch it but it was fine for one viewing. My rating: 6.5/10
Hellraiser (1987 Saturday late night special): This one has only been on my radar since not too long ago. I wasn’t interested in it before but turns out the idea I had made myself of it was completely wrong. That’s positive because it was much more original, affective and absorbing than I could imagine. It was also gross and creepy. I’m glad I bought the dvd recently! My rating: 7/10
