What did you heaven raisers watch this week? (10/27-11/02)

My week:
Diary of the dead (2007 Tubi): The actors were pretty bad with Michelle Morgan, the lead Canadian actress with the black hair, being the worst of all. She almost ruined every single scene where she had to talk. Urgh, I hated her. Her narration was awful too. Another thing that was dumb was at the beginning of her narration when she says “I added scary music, because I want you to be scared, so you don’t do the same mistakes as we did”. I didn’t like the way she said that and it’s just plain stupid. The dialogues were terribly weak but sometimes it was funny. Not even unintentionally, like Samuel the Amish guy, that was pretty funny. I was surprised to catch myself laughing a few times. Some dialogue was just plain cringe like when they arrive at a big mansion and old dude says: “ it looks like something God would’ve built, only if he had the money…” I mean wtf? Most of the characters were annoying and some of their actions were plain dumb but let’s not forget we’re dealing with a horror film here. The found footage format was well used I think and there were plenty of good zombie horror moments. The Special effects were not bad either. Some solid gore in there. That’s cool. I also appreciated that it takes place in October, that’s cool too. I’m giving it a generous 5/10 for the gore and violence.

The Addams family (1991 Netflix): I’ve seen bits and parts of this classic many times in my life but never really felt interested in watching it. Having just watched Wednesday, now was the perfect time. It did take me maybe 20 minutes to really get into it but after that it was truly enjoyable. I only knew Raul Julia for his role of Mr. Bison in Street fighter but reading that he passed softly after these films made me sad. He shone bright like a start as the family Addams padre. It seemed like Lloyd had a blast too and their chemistry was awesome. My rating: 7/10

All hallows eve 2 (2015 Tubi): You quickly realize that this is not from the same director as the first one and Art the clown is not there. Once you get past this disappointment you then realize the first short is kind of cool, the 2nd one is pretty bad, then the third one is even worse, fourth one is still bad, next one was extra lame, the one after that was crap also….They were all bad. The one with Mister Tricker was kind of cool too but lasted like 5 minutes. My rating: 3/10

Teen wolf (1985 Tubi): First time seeing this. It wasn’t bad at all. My favourite character was the coach. His lines were all great and the way he delivered them was hilarious. He gave the worst advices and that was very funny. I really wish we’d seen him more. The there’s the very energetic but never annoying Stiles, a solid sidekick to our teen wolf. The story was alright with the end being extra cheesy. The worst part was the soundtrack. Sometimes I truly wondered what was up with the sound as it felt awkward, loud and misplaced. My rating: 6.5/10

Look away (2018 Friday night special): I could split this movie in two halves: the first 45 minutes were really well done, created a perfectly uncomfortable atmosphere and the cast was pretty good. The story and mirror gimmick managed to captivate me and I was really looking forward to what would be in store for us for the second half. That’s where it lost lots of its effectiveness for me. The tension building up led to weak conclusions and the story brought us to rather trite, expected and banal places. Could’ve been so much better. My rating: 5.5/10

Coco (2017 Late night special): This one was beautiful to look at and offers a moving story. Was I hooked 100%? No. I don’t know what’s up with great animation movies and the MCMC but it’s just a weird fit. I’m so used to gore, horror, sex, trash and b-movies that it might be too much of a change of pace. My rating: 7/10

Suicide kings (1997 Saturday night special): This one had been on my list for a long time so I was happy to finally see it. There were more high than lows but it was uneven and a tad too long over complicated. I’m not sure I’d rewatch it but it was fine for one viewing. My rating: 6.5/10

Hellraiser (1987 Saturday late night special): This one has only been on my radar since not too long ago. I wasn’t interested in it before but turns out the idea I had made myself of it was completely wrong. That’s positive because it was much more original, affective and absorbing than I could imagine. It was also gross and creepy. I’m glad I bought the dvd recently! My rating: 7/10

Chucky S1
Episode 1: I struggled a bit with the first episode. Abrasive situations, obnoxious characters, smart characters taking dumb decisions… Fortunately there were also some positive aspects, mainly related to our favourite evil doll. Not bad, not great. 7/10
Episode 2: Way better than the first one. Frickin’ amazing actually! 8.5/10
Episode 3: Holding up well after ep2. 8/10
Episode 4: Some more evil doll fun and teenager shenanigans . 7.5/10
Episode 5: This one is not child friendly AT ALL. Very twisted and violent. 8/10
Episode 6: This one is called Cape Queer. Hehe 7.5/10
Episode 7: Pretty exciting stuff. 8/10
Episode 8: Excellent conclusion. 8.5/10

My only complaint is that sometime it seems like they skipped part of the story to have things move on faster and felt like I was missing some pieces of the puzzle. That happened a few times. Overall: 8/10

Hellraiser 5/10

I watched:
Girl Haunts Boy 2024 6/10 This was okay, although it does feel a little generic and predictable. The actors were decent, but I felt they were too old for the roles they played. I think the film might have been improved with younger, better actors. This wasn't great, but it was watchable.

Caddo Lake 2024 5/10 This starts off slow and takes a while before things get going. Once the twist comes, things become too convoluted and unnecessarily complicated. Acting is decent and the film looks fine, but there are issues here with the story and the way it is told.

The 5-Year Christmas Party 2024 6/10 I'm not completely sold on the two leads. They are just okay, but I'm not feeling the chemistry. This movie meanders at times and feels like it needed something more. There are a few nice little moments along the way and I wasn't completely bored.

Don’t Move 2024 7/10 This was pretty entertaining and well paced. Good performances from the two leads.

She Came Back 2024 6/10 Not bad. Decent acting, a little on the slow side, but worth a watch.

Halloween Jack 3D 2022 5/10 This wasn't very good. The acting is weak and it's not fun or entertaining.

Halloween Party 2012 6/10 There isn't much of a plot to this, but it is all about the vibes and the chill. The acting isn't great, but does have some charm. It has some quirky characters and a few funny lines. Worth a watch if you want to hang out with some wacky costumed partygoers for a couple chuckles.

A Meowy Halloween 2018 7/10 A wonderful performance by Whiskers the cat makes this worth watching. The parts focused on the human actors weren't as good.

The Christmas Charade 2024 7/10 I liked the two leads and it is a fun, different type of story for Hallmark. It's not very Christmasy, but it is pleasant and enjoyable.

Time Cut 2024 6/10 It's difficult not to compare this to Total Killer, which was a better film. This is fairly predictable and offers only mild thrills. The cast is serviceable, yet I can't help but wish they cast better actors in this.

Halloween Friends 2022 6/10 A horror comedy anthology with an unusual wraparound device. Freddy's wife, Jason's daughter, and Michael's sister are friends and tell short horror stories. A couple of the short films are entertaining. The whole thing is pretty goofy and silly. It's not great, but I liked it.

All Hallow’s Eve 2016 6/10 This was cute in a cheesy sort of way. It's predictable and cliched, but has some charm.

Black Pumpkin 2018 7/10 This was pretty fun. I liked the main characters and it was entertaining.

The Pumpkin Man 2023 4/10 This didn't really work for me. The performances fall flat, the writing isn't good and this film isn't much fun. I did like the design of the pumpkin man though and there are a couple good scenes.

My Sweet Austrian Holiday 2024 7/10 This was enjoyable and pleasant. I liked both leads and thought they had good chemistry.

Suicide Kings 1997 6/10 This only somewhat worked for me. Christopher Walken is good and there are a couple effective moments, but it also felt lacking at times. With some tweaking and better editing, it could have been great. It was just alright overall, but worth seeing for Walken's performance.

Despicable Me 4 2024 6/10 This was fine. It's slightly better than Despicable Me 3, but not as good as the first two.

Split Second 1953 7/10 I liked this. It was well written with fine performances and good dialogue.

Look Away 2018 6/10 Some effective moments, but not everything works. There are some pacing issues and it isn't completely satisfying.

A Carol for Two 2024 6/10 I liked the singing, but couldn't connect with or get interested in the story. The performances were fine though.

Anatomy of Hell 2004 8/10 This was weird, pervy, and icky. Obviously not for everyone but I liked it. I'm not quite sure I fully grasp what the director was saying about men and women, gender and sexuality, but I appreciated that she really went for it. I found it engaging and compelling.

Hellraiser 1987 5/10 I found this pretty dull for the most part. I couldn't get invested in the characters or the story.

Black Pumpkin: I think you mean 2018. I can’t find my rating but I know I’ve seen it too.

reply

Yes, 2018 is the one.

I really liked oddity, it fell a bit flat at the end but had a really good atmosphere throughout, and some genuinely creepy scenes.

Here is my entire review of Cabinet of curiosities:

Ep1 Lot 36: A very good actor, a solid premise, some nice production values, some poor story development and a crappy ending. 6/10

Ep2 Graveyard rats: I didn’t know the actor but he was really good too. You could say style Over substance but I say highly entertaining! 7.5/10

Ep3 The autopsy: Some could say the editing is gimmicky. I say artistic and very nice. Story takes a bit long to get to the gist of it but the gist is bonkers! Absolutely loved the ending. 7.5/10

Ep4 The outside: I have a feeling that this director was inspired by many of my favourite directors (Aronofsky, Gilliam, Tarantino, Coen). My kind of bizarre. Very good. 7.5/10

Ep5 Pickman’s model: My least favourite of the bunch. Some might say a remarkable effort for the genre, I say it’s an extremely boring horror short. The lead actor sucked and you know what, it’s just not my type of shit. 4.5/10

Ep6 Dreams in the witch house: for the first 5-10 minutes I thought I was gonna hate this one too but it won me over. I was hooked in the story and I like where they took it. I feel that this is what it would look like if Alexandra Iñárritu would make a Harry Potter movie with Guillermo Del Toro. Ha! My rating: 7/10

Ep 7: The Viewing: I am not a big fan of Mandy and Beyond the black rainbow story wise but enjoyed both of their atmospheres. This one was very similar to Black rainbow in how it felt. I was really enjoying the build up, expecting a bonkers ending but unfortunately they missed a great opportunity. I kind of wished the characters would have to turn on each other and get crazy weapons but no, not a good ending, as a lot of reviews already mentioned. 6/10

Ep8 The murmuring: Exceptional acting, interesting story BUT, not an horror. Or at least, the horror element was minor and cheap. As a drama this could be like an 8. But this is an horror anthology so: 6.5/10

The outlaws (2017) is in my list.

Movies

-Sketch Artist (1992)
Does anybody really like Jeff Fahey? I just never got that guy. Anyway, it felt more like one of those lower quality theatrically released thriller movies from the early 90s than a TV movie, but that's about the most positive thing I can say. What is it with these films that halfway they have no clue where to go with the plot? It got really boring after that and once again, the twist is not surprising (although they hardly even tried to misdirect the audience).

TV shows

-Dynasty - marathon
Just finished season 2. Man, I feel this fan favorite season is overrated. Yes, the adding of Joan Collins and more soap elements was an improvement, but the writing, pacing and overall structure of the show are really bad compared to the first season. Also, I'd like to personally strangle Dr. Nick Toscanni, what an annoying prick.

-The Cosby Show - marathon

reply

I don’t know fahey so I don’t know if I like him or not.

Lawnmower man! I saw that as a kid and actually meant to rewatch it.

Ok yeah, I’ve seen him before. Just didn’t know his name nor his filmography.

Matlock(2024) 7/10 episodes 1-3. Some surprisingly interesting ideas here And funny I liked it. I may get bored in the next few episodes but the 1st 3 are pretty solid.

Mulligan (2023) 6/10 Episodes 1-4.
This is a new cartoon on Netflix About the end of the world only 100 people survive. The reviews were really bad for this but it was somewhat entertaining.

Apartment 7a (2024) 7/10 This is a Rosemary's Baby prequel. Very well done I liked it.

Weird Science (1985) 10/10 A classic And holds up to the test of time.

Doctor Sleep (2019) 5/10 Badly cast, badly presented, Just not good.
