What did you ghosts watch this week? (10/20-10/26)

Boo!!

My week:

House of the dead (2003 Tubi): This was my first experience with a Uwe Boll flick and I have to say that I kind of enjoyed it! The dialogues were hilariously clunky, the actors were perfectly mediocre, the 360 slo-mo shots were cool as fuck (I don’t know if that’s a trademark from him but I would like to see more of them), the video game clips were weird as fuck but kind of funny, the makeup job was decent, the gore was good, the settings were cheap but nice and the story was pretty standard. My rating: 5.5/10

Creeping death (2023 Tubi): « Tim's mother has brain cancer, but his friends steal a sack unleashing the Aos Si Celtic spirit on Halloween night. They must survive the night or sacrifice their lives to the spirit. The spirit pursues them for their trespass. » The first 15 minutes fooled me into thinking this would be a good October movie to watch. I don’t mind low budget horror but this was really not good. I’d compare it to a new candy you get in your Halloween bag that has a nice wrapping and looks good but then you look at the flavour and see it’s orange. Then you still have hope that it might be good but it just end up tasting like shit and getting stuck in your teeth. That being said, some of the gore was fun, there were a lot of pumpkins and a cornfield. My rating: 4/10

All hallows’ eve (2013 Tubi): I’ve seen the first two Terrifier movies but always pushed this one back. Well, this week, Alie inspired me to watch it. I enjoyed most of it but didn’t care about the part with the aliens. My rating: 6/10

Haunt (2019 DVD): Could have a bit more meat in its bones but otherwise quite satisfying for a slasher film. It’s intense, creepy, violent and scary. The teen actors were okay, the clowns stole the show but it’s definitely style over substance, even for then genre. My rating: 7/10

Hocus Pocus (1993 DVD): This movie made for some good time with my kids. We all enjoyed it and it had a very fitting and appropriate Halloween vibe. The cast did a good job and the story was fun. My rating: 7.5/10

Little monsters (2019 DVD): This was a big improvement for me in rewatch. I did not have a very fond memory of it, just remembered it being alright and slightly disappointing. I don’t even understand because it was charming, entertaining and crazy enough to earn its R rating. The two leads had way more chemistry than I remembered too. My rating: 7.5/10

ParaNorman (2012 Tubi): The first 20 minutes were good but the rest of the story was meh. The animation was great though. My rating: 6/10

Wednesday (2022 Netflix): It was a marvellous experience watching this with my kids. We all got hooked right after the first episode and had a lot of fun speculating on what would happen next and trying to find the culprits. They really did a good job on the writing, the cast was very good with the main star shining as bright as night. A full blood moon lit night with bazillion of stars in the sky that is. Last series I watched was Fallout and now this. Both of them would make my list of favourite series of the last decade. Overall: 8.5/10

Boo! After this final Halloween blow-off, I for one am excited to see what non-horror movies will be featured in the MCMC this weekend!

House, of the Dead (2003) - Uwe Boll's first video game adaptation sets the standard for his work to follow. Corny, often incoherent, and yet somehow cute. 5

Haunt (2019) - There's a pretty neat psychological thriller hidden in this fairly standard freak slasher. Highlights are a few suspesnful scenes, decent makeup for the bad guys and a baseball shirt worth its weight in gold. 5.5

Hocus Pocus (1993) - Very enjoyable chaotic mess. Bette Midler, Kathy Nijimy and Sarah Jessica Parker run amok while chewing scenery in a Halloween fun house populated by other characters who cover the whole gamut of stock Disney protagonists from bland to grating. It would have been a lot less weird without the whole virgin angle. 5

Little Monsters (2019) - Even though I instinctively recoil at movies that feature horrific abominations of nature that should never be seen by human eyes, I didn't really mind Josh Gad. 7

Paranorman (2012) - Kind of wild that one of the most ambitious animated works of the previous decade would not be entirely out of place as a modestly budgeted made for TV kids Halloween movie. Jam-packed with intricate artistic touches with beard and hair bobs. The story gets a little incoherent in the final third, but not enough to derail a wholly charming spooky delight. 8

Also this week:

The Substance (2024) - What a ride. This is the type of go-for-broke artistry that major releases are desperately lacking. Shades of Cronenberg body horror and some standout performances from the main cast. 10

Beauty and the Least: The Misadventures of Ben Banks (2012) - Nearly fell out of my chair when you gave it a shout out over Zoom. Even though the main character/actor looks like a bohemian caveman, the dialogue is first draft material. I still have to appreciate the scrappy indie charm of something shot on a consumer camera. 6

Highlander III The Final Dimension (1994) - It may be a distinctly low budget effort that looks like a Netflix movie shot on film, but this being the '90s I can make an exception. 6.5

The City Girl (1984) - I finally found it, the movie that I've been looking for! It was a second generation VHS copy, and now I'm hankering for a Criterion release. Though rough in some respects, it still shines as an accomplished work overall. 8.5

WOW!...THAT IS HUGE...CONGRATS, BUDDY.🫂

Thank you, thank you! It was a bit of a trek, but I admire this chronicle of city garbage.

Also, Colleen Camp shines in a supporting role!

AND NOW TWO OF US HAVE SEEN THE FILM.😉

Hubie Halloween 4.5/10- stupid but I like it for some reason.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) 7.5/10- good remake with Jessica Biel looking fantastic.

The Witches 7.5/10- It's odd how we were watching movies involving kidnapping, murder, stranger danger, and death of loved ones. Yet, it's goof. My only gripe is with some of the filmwork.

Witching and Bitching 6/10- it's funny and strange.

Day of the beast 7/10- I like the humor, atmosphere, and subversion. The ending works for me because it's small.

Welcome to mooseport- 6/10- it's a movie that should have been made in the 90's.

Morgan Stewart's coming home 6/10- a horror movie fan is brought home to be a campaign prop rather than a family member. Great music.

Hubie Halloween: Can’t find any trace of my review or rating. From memory: 5/10

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003): 6/10

reply

Wait, so the fact that I mentioned Ben Banks made you want to watch it for some reason?

Or did you almost fell off your chair because you had also seen it before and decided to rewatch it?

reply

I watched it for the first time the night before. Amazing coincidence and a welcome one!

reply

Shwah!!??

You should’ve said something!!
Haha

Then again, you probably were flabbergasted.

reply

I was off camera and didn't want to interrupt, but rest assured I was jumping up and down in excitement. :-)

Boo who?

All hallows’ eve 6/10
Haunt 7/10
Hocus pocus 8/10
Little monsters 7/10
Paranorman 8/10

I watched:

Curious Caterer: Forbidden Fruit 2024 6/10 The leads do a pretty good job and there is a decent mystery.

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying 7/10 There are some fun moments and good songs here, but not everything works. It feels a little too long as well.

Frankenstein 2015 6/10 Not bad. The performances are decent and the story is told in an effective way.

Scouting for Christmas 2024 7/10 I liked all three main characters and this was an enjoyable and pleasant film.

Holiday Crashers 2024 6/10 This was alright, but could have used more party crashing and less of the legal storyline. It's not as good as Twas the Date Before Christmas or Scouting For Christmas.

Little Monsters 2019 7/10 Lupita Nyong'o is good in this enjoyable zombie comedy. I didn't find Alexander England all that interesting or likeable though.

Diary of the Dead 2007 4/10 I didn't like the voice over narration and the dialogue didn't sound natural or believable. The characters weren't interesting or likeable and the acting fell flat.

Conclave 2024 9/10 This is juicer than expected. It has scheming, secrets and scandals. Ralph Fiennes is excellent and Stanley Tucci is fantastic too. The score is great and the cinematography and production design are very good too. Conclave has a sharp, well written screenplay with some wonderful dialogue. One of the best films of the year.

The Runner from Ravenshead 2010 8/10 An adventure film about an escaped prisoner on the run. What sets this film apart is that all the actors are children. Joel Steege directs his kids Amelia, Harrison, Addison, Brendan, and Tate. He also wrote and produced the film with his wife, Lisa. The five siblings have good chemistry together and all do a wonderful job. The film is well shot and has an effective score. If you are looking for a fun adventure with a cute cast, then you will likely enjoy this.

Witch 2018 7/10 This has some really interesting, cool visuals. I liked the babysitter and the girl's performances and their relationship. There are moments when it loses a little steam, but overall there is a lot to like here.

Humane 2024 6/10 Some interesting ideas, but not everything works. Acting is fine, but the writing needs to be sharper.

The Defense of New Haven 2016 7/10 I enjoyed this. The kids do a good job and it is a fun story.

Across the Bridge 1957 7/10 Rod Steiger was quite good in this and it is an interesting story.

Haunt 2019 7/10 I thought this was effectively creepy, well paced and made good use of the lighting, sets and costumes. I

Hocus Pocus 1993 8/10 I enjoyed this. I like the performances and it is a fun movie.

ParaNorman 2012 8/10 Excellent animation. I like the characters and the story.

Halloween Kickback 2021 5/10 This wasn't very interesting or funny. On the bright side, the cast is fairly likeable and there are some chill vibes.

Diary of the dead: The narration was cringe!! I totally agree with you. I will post my full review in tomorrow’s thread but I really didn’t like the lead actress. I was a bit more generous with my rating than you though, mostly for the gore.

Mostly football - college and NFL. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Saw some really good games, though.

reply

I forgot to mention I'm rewatching The Storyteller again (you should really show it to your kids!), but since I've mentioned the show before I guess it doesn't really matter.

Movies

-Evidence of Blood (1998)
David Strathairn plays the main character, but I've never felt he had enough presence to carry a movie. The southern accents were awful, the pacing was really slow, some events were not logical, not much suspense or even an investigation of the murder case and the twist was rather obvious early on in the movie.

TV shows

-Dynasty - marathon

-The Cosby Show - marathon
