What did you funny people watch this week? (09/29-10/05)

Hope you had as a good a week as I had!

Pumpkinhead (1988 Tubi): I think this movie would make a good combination with Dark night of the scarecrow. The background story for the revenge trope is very well established and strong. I didn’t feel like the movie rushed into the gore material. I also really liked the settings and the look of it all. That being said, it was also a good monster movie with a few memorable kills like the brother’s body hanging in front of the front door (classic), the girl getting dropped from a tree unto a rock, the girl that gets smashed through the kitchen window and just bleeds into the sink and of course, the rifle used as a sword. exceeded my expectations for sure. My rating: 7/10

Pacific Rim (2015 Blu-ray): Introduced my sons to this movie and they loved it. As for me, it held up very good and still was a blast from start to finish with solid characters, amazing special effects and an interesting enough story. M y rating: 7.5/10

House on haunted hill (1999 Tubi): Last time I had seen this I was 16 years old. I did remember a few parts of it but mostly remembered liking it back then. Well, right after the bat we got the most ingenious and scariest roller coaster created by none other than George Rus followed by a montage of Ali Larter, Peter Gallagher, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras and Tay e Diggs with Sweet dreams from Marilyn Manson. That’s off to a great start! Then comes Kattan and Famke Janssen. Just getting better! Then we have Max Perlich as the tech guy… that’s pretty cool too? So basically, I liked the cast, is what I’m trying to say. Another thing that was new is the fact that since we watched the original with the movie club I was able to make some connections I couldn’t before. Mainly, the Price character. I really enjoyed this movie and the machine that makes a sane person insane was crazy! The final twists work well with me too. My rating: 7/10

The invitation (2022 Netflix): This one was on my personal list and became a contender for the movieclub but I decided to watch the first 15 minutes to see if it was any good. After 15 minutes I kept going because I still wasn’t sure. The actors were all good but unfortunately it got worse and worse so I decided to just finish it and scratch it off the list. Sad because it had potential to bring something new to a common horror sub-genre but it failed miserably. Nothing new or really interesting to see here honestly. Funny thing is, the way they ended the movie with the final scene makes me think that if they make a sequel it could be twice as good as this. My rating: 4/10

Bloodsucking bastards (Friday night special): For a low-budget horror comedy, it was fun enough. Maybe not as violent or gore as I would’ve liked but not disappointing either. I didn’t care much for the characters during the first half but they eventually grew on me. A little… It’s not hilarious but had some funny moments. Satisfying for one viewing but I don’t think I would necessarily rewatch it…. Maybe, we never know… My rating: 6/10

Abigail (2024 Friday late night pick): It’s always nice to see that the horror genre is not dead. It’s actually quite alive still and here, it comes in the form of a charming 12 years old ballerina girl. The movie goes my smoothly with plenty of action and, surprisingly, a good dose of humour too. My rating: 7.5/10

Jennifer’s body (Saturday night special): This one had surprisingly good production values, the cast was great, the story was fun and it was pretty funny at times. The 2009 emo power vibe was strong and I enjoyed that a lot too. My rating: 7/10

Fair ratings my guy, fair ratings! 👍

Haven’t you seen my other movies?

All but Jennifer's Body and the invitation. Not a fan of the writer or cast of Jennifer's Body and the invitation was better as an episode of the twilight zone.

Pumpkinhead- 6/10. Great creature design but it's missing something. Maybe it's because the kills were off screen

Abigail- 6.5/10. It's fun but i haven't thought about it since seeing it in theaters. It's like M3GAN, Snakes on a plane, sharknado, or Cocaine Bear. Fun one time watches.

Pacific Rim- 8/10. it's fun.

House on Haunted Hill- 7.5/10. Great start with the roller coaster and a nice mix of comedy, horror, and early 2000's CGI

I see what you mean but Cocaine bear i’d rewatch a few times. I really liked it.

I threw myself onto the mat one too many times, and look what happened!

Pacific Rim (2015) - Big robots and monsters clatter the piss out of each other. What a glorious movie. 8

House on Haunted Hill (1999) - I haven't seen it recently, but I recall it featuring a great cast and Chris Kattan. 6.5

Bloodsucking Bastards (2015) - Less than a complete movie. It does not rise above the basic metaphor of "work sucks", and the characters are types at best without rising to the level of specific individuals. A few good line deliveries. 4.5

Abigail (2024) - Someone probably took note from Kirsten Dunst's performance as a vampire child an structured a whole haunted house flick based on that. It's kind of the Hanna Montana of vampire movies, with Dan Stevens leading the charge delivering just the right amount of ham with his performance. 7

Funhouse Massacre (2015) - A janky piece of schlock with at least a third of the budget devoted to smoke/fog machines. The biggest surprise is that this was shot at an actual theme park of sorts - essentially a swath of open land out in Ohio? Admirable efforts all around. 5.5

Jennifer's Body (2009) - Karyn Kusama (of the 2005 Æon Flux adaptation fame) directs this showdown between two 2004 Lindsay Lohan vehicle co-stars, Megan Fox from Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen and Amanda Seyfried from Mean Girls. Diablo Cody provides the special sauce with whip-sharp dialogue and a playful navigation of schlock with a bit of genre commentary thrown in. A movie that stands head and shoulders above the sum of its parts. 8

I watched:

The Real West 2024 6/10 This was just okay. Not bad, but could have been better.

Killer Heat 2024 5/10 This was boring and dull for the most part.

Daughters 2024 9/10 A beautiful, powerful, sad, and honest documentary. You will feel all the feelings.

FanGirl 2024 7/10 This was trashy fun. The acting isn't very good, but I enjoyed it.

The Girl on the Broomstick 1972 7/10 It has a certain charm and whimsy to it.

Crimes of the Future 1970 5/10 This was surprisingly boring.

Spider Baby 1967 6/10 This was somewhat interesting. Performances are mostly effective.

The Spell 1977 6/10 A decent tv movie, but at times it feels like an inferior version of Carrie. A couple fun moments.

The Entity 1982 7/10 Barbara Hershey is very good in this interesting supernatural horror film. It feel a little too long and there are times when it felt a bit repetitive, but still an engaging and worthwhile film.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch 1996 6/10 Melissa Joan Hart is likeable and charming here, but the film is just okay.

Ghost Goggles 2016 5/10 The acting is this is mostly bad, with a couple exceptions. I enjoyed the performance of the goth girl and the ghost girl. The lead boy's performance was flat and wooden and didn't really work for the film. The adults in the movie were all mediocre at best. They didn't do enough with the story. It isn't really a horror movie and could have used more and better ghostly action. There were a couple funny lines and an amusing scene where the ghost girl helps the boy with his test and makes fun of her sister. If you enjoy bad children's movies, you may get a kick out of this.

Have You Seen My Man? 2024 5/10 This wasn't as fun or entertaining as it should been. I did like some of the cast though.

Scream 1996 8/10 A fun and entertaining rewatch.

Salem’s Lot 2024 5/10 This feels like a bad tv movie. It looks cheap and ugly. Lewis Pullman falls flat in his performance, but that may be more to do with the way the character is written. Most of the characters are underdeveloped here and the actors don't have much to work with. Alfre Woodard does a decent job with her character and gives the best performance in the film. This isn't very enteraining or fun, although there are a couple cool looking moments.

Alison’s Birthday 1981 5/10 This was just okay, mildly suspensful with a couple interesting moments.

Killer Witches from Outer Space 2023 5/10 Not very good, but it has a couple amusing scenes and a few likeable characters.

Hundreds of Beavers 2022 8/10 It's cute and fun, but goes on for a little too long and needed more beavers.

Beware: Children at Play 1989 8/10 This was entertaining and fun, better than expected. It has a wild and memorable ending.

Hold Your Breath 2024 6/10 This was decent. Performances are good, but the film isn't quite as engaging as it needs to be.

It’s What’s Inside 2024 7/10 This had an interesting concept and some good twists along the way. The main quibble I had is that we don't really get to know the characters or get invested in them before stuff starts to happen.

Bloodsucking Bastards 2015 6/10 This was okay. It picks up steam as it goes along and has some fun moments.

Abigail 2024 8/10 This was a lot of fun. Wonderful performances from the cast, especially Alisha Weir, who is fantastic.

The Funhouse Massacre 2015 6/10 I liked this a bit more on rewatch. It's not really funny, but it is mildly amusing at times. As a horror film, there are a couple reasonably effective moments. Not great, but I have seen worse.

Jennifer’s Body 2009 6/10 There's a lot going on here, but not all of it works. The film is trying to say something worthwhile, but it doesn't really convey it's message successfully. Some clever lines and fun moments, but it is a bit flawed and messy.

Movies

-Escape Clause (1996)
I've never been a fan of Andrew McCarthy, to be honest. The movie, was technically competently made, but it was illogical. Nobody's actions made any sense and the twist was nonsense. It seems the script was written with someone who had beef with their insurance company.

TV shows

-Dynasty - marathon
Can you believe it??? The show hasn't been on Dutch tv in 30 years, and just when I decide to do a rewatch, some channel over here anounces they're gonna start showing it next month. Well, too late!

-The Cosby Show - marathon
