What did you nightriders watch this week? (09/22-09/28)

O’ September, how you’ve been good to me. I will miss you bro.

My week:

Jeepers Creepers: Reborn (2022 Prime): I did enjoy the previous movies (even the third one) so I had to see this for myself because 2.5/10? That’s harsh! So I will try to be as positive as I can here; there are some nice colour contrasts, set designs are cool, fun costumes, the Creeper has decent taste in music and still uses vinyls, we have some cheap CGI, crappy dialogues, the actors are mediocre and playing shitty roles so we don’t really care about any of them dying, the off-cam kills really help us wonder what the fuck is going on and…yeah, that’s about as positive as I can be. HEY!! This movie sucked. I’m a generous person though. My rating: 3/10

Everybody loves Mandy Lane (2006 TV): Apparently, when this movie came out, teenage girls in bikinis was the hottest thing ever and seemed to be Levine’s obsession. Strange because in the 80s slashers we could see plenty of bush and titties like there was nothing special there. Also, Levine made two movies I love; The Wackness and Warm bodies, both of which elevates way above the immature horniness where all boys treat girls like objects and all girls have no self-esteem. As for the movie, it takes way too long before the interesting stuff happens and the characters were not really memorable or likeable. Even the pothead (who is normally the coolest character in these kind of movies) is a dick as he doesn’t want to share his weed unless people do things for him. At least the ending was somewhat rewarding and violent enough. My rating: 5.5/10

Birdman (2014 Blu-ray): watched this in my birthday for a 5th year in a row. The main reason I love this movie is because of how it makes me feel. It is hard for me to describe how it makes me feel though. It’s a unique feeling that only this movie can provoke in me. The music, the camera, the actors, the characters and the story all come together to captivate me deeply. My ratings 8.5/10

Rebel Ridge (2024 Netflix): Watched it with my brother and father on my birthday. We ate sushis, drank a few bloody Cesars and had a fun time. The movie was pretty standard but very well made. Great tension buildup but slightly disappointed by its release. I don’t mind anticlimactic but I also love me some crazy carnage. My rating: 7/10

Hell night (Friday night special): Needed more kills, more gore, more sex and more humour. It was also too slow and too long. The killer was a bit underwhelming too. The story was simple but effective, the actors were alright and overall, it was a well made teen slasher flick, I’ll give it that. It’s crap well done. My rating: 5/10

Dark night of the scarecrow (Friday late night special): Another movie that was not at all what I was thinking it would be but it came as a great surprise. It was an effective and powerful supernatural revenge story but subverted many of my expectations and regular horror tropes. Was it really that supernatural though? Who knows? Ha! My rating: 7.5/10

Night of the demons (Saturday night special): I really liked that movie. The camera tricks, the cast, the dumb humour, the creepy moments, the music, the gore and brief nudity. All pretty fucking fantastic if you ask me. This movie was exactly what I wanted it to be and more. It’s the whole package for this genre. My rating: 7.5/10

Night of the comet (Saturday late night special): I’m very happy about that one too. It offers a familiar plot but manages to stay away from the many bothersome tropes. It’s unique, original and refreshing. What with its stylish look and cool characters. Only negative comment; I would’ve liked the last 20 minutes to go out with a bigger bang, even if bang there was. My rating: 7/10

Dark night of the scarecrow 8/10
Night of the demons 8/10
Night of the comet 7/10

I watched:

20,000 Species of Bees 2023 9/10 Sofía Otero is fantastic in a beautiful, powerful performance. This is a compelling and moving film, well written and with good performances from the supporting cast. Highly recommended.

Falling Together 2024 5/10 Most of the characters were annoying and the story wasn't good enough.

Rock Rock Rock! 1956 6/10 The story is weak, but there are a couple amusing moments. Some of the musical performances are interesting and it is worth seeing for Tuesday Weld's debut.

The Monolith Monsters 1957 6/10 This was decent. It's not silly or cheesy, but is reasonably intelligent and somewhat effective.

The Only Child 2024 7/10 This was pretty entertaining. I really enjoyed the main girl's performance.

Gidget 1959 7/10 This was enjoyable. Sandra Dee is delightful.

Out West with the Peppers 1940 6/10 This was alright. It had some cute, amusing moments.

Uglies 2024 6/10 This was okay. It's watchable and the acting is alright.

The Union 2024 5/10 This is really mediocre and I didn't like Mark Wahlberg's performance. I think he was miscast. Halle Berry was likeable and did a decent job with the material, but even she can't save this.

Apartment 7A 2024 5/10 Julia Garner does a good job, but the film feels like a bad remake or rip off of Rosemary's Baby, instead of a prequel. It's not satisfying or enjoyable and drags at times. There are a couple effective moments, but we have seen them before and done better. The screenplay is predictable, formulaic and mediocre. This feels like a step down from the director's previous film, Relic.

Will & Harper 2024 8/10 This was an enjoyable and lovely documentary about a beautiful friendship between two likeable individuals. It's humorous, sweet, heartfelt and entertaining.

The Wild Robot 2024 8/10 The animation is fantastic and I really liked the character design. The voice acting is good too. I thought some parts of the story early on were wonderful, but some parts later in the film didn't completely work for me. I don't think this is the best animated film of the year, but it is very good.

The Deliverance 2024 6/10 This is a mix of family drama and supernatural horror, but it doesn't always blend well together. Some parts of the film work, but some don't. It's a bit messy and the tone isn't consistent. There are some effective moments though and I was engaged in what was happening for the most part.

Between Midnight and Dawn 1950 7/10 This was pretty good, an entertaining and effective buddy cop film noir.

Hell Night 1981 5/10 I had seen this once before and didn't remember much of it. After rewatching it, I see why. It's mediocre, generic, and forgettable. I like it less the second time around.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow 1981 8/10 Really enjoyed this. It's well acted and with a good story.

Night of the Comet 1984 7/10 This was enjoyable and fun. I liked the two leading ladies and the film looks great.

Night of the Demons 1988 8/10 This was my third time watching. This is a fun, very 80s horror movie.

Right!? The Union SUCKED!!

Yet KOWALSKI liked it so let’s bust his balls about it.

reply

I do enjoy Kowalski's balls.

reply

Goodness gracious!

THE UNION WAS A FUN FLICK....PUNCHES AND LAUGHS....WHAT MORE COULD I ASK FOR?

reply

It pulled weak ass punches that went right in the butter and the jokes fell flat like a pancake on a Saturday morning at the Keeper’s residence. Bad movie.

LMAO....😉

The first Jeepers Creepers is excellent. The sequel is solid. I don't plan on watching any of the sequels.

My week:

Andor season 1 (2022) - Hands down one of the most well written pieces of media I've consumed in recent memory. The performances, costumes, set design & cinematography were all fantastic. I hope season 2 isn't a letdown cause the first season is a rare 10/10 for me.

The King's Man (2021) - Dull, boring & a waste of time. Even Ralph Fiennes couldn't save this movie. The Kingsman movies have never reached the heights of the first movie. 4/10

Klaus (2019) - One of the sweetest films I've watched in a while. It's rare for me to find a film that legit just promotes acts of kindness. I feel like we've become so cynical & modern films mirror that. Cause we've got so much bleak & depressing stuff lately, both on the big screen & on TV.

It's refreshing & a welcome break to find/watch something like Klaus every once in a while. 8.5/10

I know I’ve seen Klaus and loved it too b it can’t find my review or rating and don’t remember it well enough. I’ll have to rewatch it this winter. Maybe even with the MovieClub, who knows.

Also, it was a genuine surprise hearing Norm Macdonald in the movie. Had no idea he was in it.

A belated Happy Birthday! I'll be celebrating my own birthday this coming Tuesday.

Movies

-Nothing But The Truth (1995)
TV movie. Except for the nonsense about polygraph tests, the movie was slow but okayish...until the very stupid ending!

TV shows

-Dynasty - marathon
Back to the night time soap! This time it's the other great classic from the 80s. Let's see if it's just as disappointing as my Dallas rewatch 😬

-The Cosby Show - marathon
I enjoyed this show back in the day (the early seasons at least), I'm not going to boycott it because Cosby is a giant creep.

Anything special planned for your birthday?

For mine we want to my favourite Mexican restaurant that’s on the side of the river. It was great.

reply

We're gonna do a pizza party with the family at home.
