Looking for grim, violent and bleak historical movies made 2000-present that do NOT have an ugly color tint

What I would like is a movie similar to "The Revenant" in content and tone, but with a natural color pallette instead of the now-standard historical movie muddy greys, browns and blacks. Imagine what The Revenant would have looked like with the color scheme of "Jeremiah Johnson" or "The Searchers" instead of the color scheme of the Orc scenes in LotR. That's what I would like.

so nothing too specific then.

Well, it doesn't HAVE to be about Mountain Men like The Revenant, although that would be great. I just want a historical movie made this century that is violent, grim and bleak in tone, but has a realistic, full color palette.

do u game?

reply

Yeah, I play Warband, Skyrim, Kenshi and Battlefield 2 on my prehistoric PC, but I can't play Red Dead because my son won't share his Xbox Series X.

Seraphim falls (06) is a fairly bleak and violent post American Civil War ‘manhunt’ sort of movie. It stars Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson and while the first two thirds of the flick are pretty much like First Blood the final act gets a bit mysterious and odd in a cool way.

reply

Hmm. I saw that soon after it came out on DVD but I can't recall much. I'll have to give it another look. Thanks!

reply

Yeah, I remember enjoying it a lot, I’m due for a rewatch as well👍

reply

Now that's a movie I haven't seen in ages.

Absolutely loved it as a teen.

Flesh + Blood (1985). Paul Verhoeven goes medieval.

reply

Hell yeah! That was a good movie👍

I’ve always appreciated Rutger Hauer and Jennifer Jason Leigh was super smoking hot, what a body! SHEESH!!!

*no apologies to the offended sorts 🥸

reply

Oh yeah! I love that one! But I was looking for movies post-2000 because I have seen just about everything in this style from before.

Back then, the use of color filters wasn't that common, except in Westerns, which started using a sepia filter about 1980 or so.

The Duelist- it's good.

The Northman?

Grim, violent, bleak and 2000-present: check. Although this list could have been so much better without that arbitrary year restriction.
Historical: little wiggle room with the definition there
No color tint: while I share a distaste for it, it doesn't occupy RAM in my brain, so I leave it to you to check out screenshots and be your own judge.
Otherwise, these are all recommended.

Snowtown (2011) - truly not for the faint of heart. Henry: PoaSK levels of wretchedness.
Animal Kingdom (2010)
Chopper (2000) - don't know why my top three are all Australian.
The Girl Next Door (2007)
Kajaki AKA Kilo Two Bravo (2014)
Felon (2008)
A Field in England (2013) - B & W. Not a "tint." :D
Black Death (2010)
The Lighthouse (2019) - also B & W
There Will Be Blood (2007)
The Proposition (2005)
The Irishman (2019)
Patriots Day (2016)
American Gangster (2007)

Bone tomahawk 2015

Shame on me for omitting that near-masterpiece from my list.
