Hezbollah pagers explode across Lebanon, causing nearly 3,000 casualties, 9 dead

So... this is a thing that happened:

While unnerving, it's also quite tactical and about as targeted as a strike can get. But if it can be done with this, who's to say this couldn't be used against noncombatants by a nefarious party at some point in the future? That prospect is a bit paranoia-inducing.

Side-note: the level of planning and ingenuity this operation must have required is impressive, but a bit sinister.

This will certainly calm things down, which is of course what we ALL want... right ?

Bibi's cooking up his October Surprise, a few weeks early.

Probably should be in politics, though.

reply

That's terrorism.

I'm sure plenty of innocent civilians were harmed or killed like doctors who use pagers or someone just nearby when they went off. I wouldn't trust anything made in Israel. Journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed because of Israeli surveillance technology on his phone.

"The client appears to have used NSO’s spyware, Pegasus, which can transform a phone into a surveillance device, with microphones and cameras activated without a user knowing."

Beep Beep, motherfucker.

A foreign government or terrorist group could do the same with consumer cellphones. Never assume it wouldn't happen to you.

reply

It's definitely scary stuff.

I disagree that this story has much to do with politics. This specific situation is about ancient religious beliefs and social conflict. Take away any and all governmental elements and this war would still be happening. And as terrifying as the technological aspect of this story is, as someone in the tech industry myself I find it very interesting, but also in essence not political.

While I can see how it could be spun as a political story since there's little doubt the Israeli government was involved with this incident, the stronger elements here are not political in nature in my view. This is Hatfield/Mccoy level stuff. I almost put it in the Politics section, then decided it wasn't really a political story, being comprised more pervasively of apolitical components.

Ultimately, I didn't post this for political reasons, but for the fact that thousands of pagers could be exploded.

There was nothing political about the original post here. Is your claim here that all discussion of current events must be relegated to the politics forum? Noone can discuss how scary it is that cellphone bombs might soon be a thing here in General Discussion?

Sorry to burst your pun bubble and for the threads in general discussion that extend beyond who's watching what movie and samoanjoes shit posts, but get over yourself.

More and more people are starting to understand why you were banned.

reply

People still use pagers? Lol! Last time I had one was in 1999.

reply

They are used by medical staff because they're more dependable. A hospital has areas which can't be reached by cell like a basement, but can by pager.

reply

It's politics no matter what you think.

reply

In a certain respect, everything is politics. It's all about perspective and focus. My intent with the OP wasn't political, however. It was about the fact that something of this nature usually relegated to movies was technically possible.
