Something tells me to be a little skeptical. Why is she revealing this only now? Anyway, maybe it's true, maybe not...and maybe more distant than a first cousin...if she, or one of her parents, was a first cousin to them that would be easy enough to confirm (I think).
What is the difference between a first cousin and a first cousin once removed (and so on)? It's whether you share a grandparent, or great-grandparent, or great-great-grandparent, and so on, with someone else.
