Gambit vs. Hail-Mary

Do they mean the same thing? I'm looking online but im not finding anything satisfactory.

gambit.
a device, action, or opening remark, typically one entailing a degree of risk, that is calculated to gain an advantage.

hail-mary.
The term "Hail Mary" is sometimes used to refer to any last-ditch effort with little chance of success.

Whilst a gambit has a degree of risk, a ‘Hail-Mary’ has little chance of success. To me, that’s the difference.

reply

So in other words hail-mary would be a leap of faith (hence the name) where as gambit would be a calculated (strategic) risk?

reply

That’s how I see it, yes.
