What did you troopers watch this week? (08/04-08/10)
What up troops!!!
My week:
Godzilla: King of monsters (2019 DVD): Although I have a few issues with the story and some character decisions, this remains a fantastic and gigantic monster movie. The special effects are astounding, the action is amazing and the story is… alright. My rating: 7.5/10
The cured (2017 TV): This was a refreshing, smart and innovative take on the zombie genre but if you approach it as a horror film you’ll be highly disappointed. It’s actually a drama set on a backdrop of a zombie epidemic. It could’ve been very good if not for a few stupid parts (“The targets are empty buildings don’t worry.” A few casualties later: “ But you told me the target were empty!” “Every revolution needs a few casualties.”). That being said, I recommend it to anyone down for a solid low-budget zombie drama. My rating: 6/10
Magic magic (2013 TV): This low-budget Chile psychological thriller offers great performances from the actors to bring to life strange, deranged and mostly unlikable characters. To be honest, Juno Temple was phenomenal. We also got sick animals, dead animals, pervy animals, hypnosis, cold water, hot fire, booze, pills, Spanish, rituals, weird music… it all made this cocktail hard to swallow but I’m glad I drank it. Basically nothing truly horrible happens for 90% of the film’s length yet they managed to sustained an eerie and unsettling feeling that captured me from the start until the dramatic ending. The kind of film that leaves you staring at the screen for a long moment as the credits just roll under your eyes. Then I went and spent a good hour reading reviews and interpretations (and harsh critics!). Basically, most people seem to hate as they expected a horror or magic movie but does who enjoyed it loved it. Here’s a positive one:

Cherry 2000 (Friday night special): It was colourful and inventive (the settings, the costumes, the vehicles), quirky (the characters, the dialogue) entertaining and original (the unpredictable story). It had action (kaplow! 💥 ), comedy (hahaha) and romance (smexy). It exceeded all my expectations and I actually had high hopes for it. Very fun time indeed. If I had one complaint, it would be the slightly abrupt ending. Now leave me alone, it’s time for a sandwich. 🥪 My rating: 7/10
Feast II: sloppy seconds (Saturday night special): Mostly very poorly made with mostly shitty actors but the body horror with the monsters was out of this world. I won’t forget it anytime soon and watching it was fun in a certain kind of sloppy, nasty way. So yeah, the title fit well but could also been called “monster cocks from outer space”. My rating: 5/10
Triangle (Saturday late night special): The first half was not very interesting and I was really wondering where it was going/what was going on but the second half more than made up for it. It made for some good conversations about what it meant, and we can theorize about it plenty. Definitely the kind of movie that will benefit on a second viewing. My rating: 7/10
