There are more than a few people here who can speak two or more languages which is pretty cool.

If we’re using a strict definition of fluency -- able to speak, read, and write -- I’m bilingual:

• English: I’m a native US English speaker.
• Spanish: Learned as a second language; I can speak, read, and write at a fairly advanced level.

Those are the only languages I speak fluently. But if we're talking about speaking languages more loosely, as in carry basic verbal communication:

• Portuguese: This is bizarre, but I can somehow understand Portuguese fairly well, almost as well as Spanish and English, yet I can’t actually speak it. I learned some of the basics but always get confused and accidentally start speaking Spanish; I can just bullshit my way through it if that makes any sense.

• Italian: I know the very basics and can speak and understand enough to survive, but most Italians seem to speak better English or Spanish than I speak Italian, so I kind of stopped practicing. But Italian is actually my favorite language though, it sounds so cool.

• French: I started learning French a few months ago but had to stop because of time constraints. I know the very basics and hope to get back into it soon. This is the language I am by far the worst in, but I WILL speak it one day, lol. I’m determined to get to at least an intermediate level.

There are a few other languages in which I know how to say basic pleasantries like “hello,” “goodbye,” and “thanks,” but nothing at a conversational level.

That's awesome, VinceD! So far you're the most cosmopolitan in this thread.

reply

Thanks!

Wait until AndyKing gets here though; I'm pretty sure he's James Bond or something lol.

BTW you didn't say which languages you speak

reply

I speak English and French only. French literature is wasted on me though.

reply

I only speak two languages, English and bad English.

reply

You're from the West End?

reply

It's a line from The Fifth Element. I actually speak English and I know enough Spanish to be read a menu in a Mexican restaurant.

reply

Hope you watch the Hermano scene from Arrested Development (on Youtube).

reply

English
Indonesian and Malaysian (which are very similar)
Thai
Khmer
French

Plus a little bit of Tagalog, Japanese, Mandarin, German and Latin.

I have a very basic understanding of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.

Oh, I’m not sure about that.

reply

I AM...I ENVY THE SHIT OUT OF YOU.😐🙂

reply

You have a daughter that loves you - many don’t have that.

English.

I used to be fluent in French, but it's been awhile. I can watch a movie without subtitles no issue, but speaking it I'm not as confident these days.

I know conversational Spanish, and ASL, and I know the basics of German, and Afrikaans.

reply

If you can watch and understand a French movie, then you are bilingual.

reply

Only English, although when I travel I try to learn some basic words and phrases for that country - It's unfortunate as Americans, that unless you live a a very few areas of the country, there isn't much need to learn and practice any other language.

reply

Quite understandable enough :)

reply

German, Spanish and English.
