What did you good folks watch this week? (06/23-06/29)

Five nights at Freddy’s (2023 Prime): The other day I watched Coraline with my 9 year old and now it was time for our 2nd horror movie experience together. My 7 year old also joined us as they both were aware of this movie because of a video game they saw clips of on YouTube. All that to say, the excitement was high on that afternoon (in order to prevent nightmares as much as possible). The movie did not disappoint. Entertaining story, solid cinematography, cool atmosphere, thrilling moments of (soft) terror. It was a success on all the line. Piper Rubio is such a great kid actress. She totally won me over with her charm. The rest of the cast was perfectly fine too. Good chemistry between Cop girl and security guy. My rating: 7.5/10

The uninvited (1944 TV): This is no doubt a solid film but the main character was a bit obsessed with Stella Meredith while I quickly became fascinated by Gail Russell, the actress playing the role. At first I was simply spellbound by her beauty and was impressed by her acting yet she gave me an eerie feeling. Then I read about her tragic life. How can such a beautiful, promising young lady annihilate herself with vodka? Very strange. Anyways, the movie looks good, it has an interesting ghost story that unravels well in the end yet it’s always approached in somewhat of a playful manner and the actors make it all work very well. This movie is better than Psycho, Vertigo and House on haunted hill. Yeah I said it. My rating: 8/10

Gifted (2017 TV): “Frank, a single man raising his child prodigy niece Mary, is drawn into a custody battle with his mother.” I let myself get impressed by the rating of this movie; 7.6 for over 132K votes! Turns out it was a perfectly fine movie to watch with my wife and daughter but did it standout much from all the other emotional dramas we watched? Not really. The young actress was good but she ain’t no Piper Rubio. I normally cry during these films but I didn’t this time. Here’s the metacritic I agree with the most:
“Gifted wants to be an “honest” tearjerker, but it’s as plotted out as an equation on a blackboard. It’s the undergirding of formula that roots the movie in the commercial marketplace, but that may ultimately limit its appeal.” My rating: 6/10

Creed III (2023 Blu-ray): I much enjoyed the first two so I was really hoping a 3rd entry wouldn’t be too much but starting with a chronic 2000 Dr. Dre song (The watcher) is always good way to win my heart from the start. Then we get to the scene of this kid beating up an adult followed by the first boxing match and it almost looks like the special FX are worst than the previous ones but I got used to it as the movie went on (that fight scene with no crown and the intense choir music was dope). The drama is still good and emotional (essential to boxing movies it seems like and always a high point for this franchise), the cast does a good job but the boxing story is where it hurts. I’m not a big boxe connoisseur but doesn’t the story make basically no sense at all? I don’t think any of what happened with happen in real life. Anyways, good show, once more. And for those who are wondering, yeah, I did cry. My rating: 7/10

Ed and his dead mother (Friday night special): The story was quirky and fun, same for the look and feel of the film. The actors gave it their all and did not over play it, which would’ve been an easy trap to fall in. Buscemi’s role is perfect for him and he’s allowed to showcase all his talent, his facial expressions and peculiar looks. The scene where his uncle leaves the kitchen to go shoot the mother is s perfect example. I’m glad I picked this to kick off MCMC’s weekend. Yay! My rating: 7/10

Saved! (Friday late night special): This is the kind of movie that if you are not hooked in the story right off the start, you will struggle to enjoy all the way long as it is pretty much keeping the focus on the very same spot for the entire length. It’s a one note movie. I thought people would realize she was pregnant way earlier in the film and that she would be demonized and some silly stuff would happen around that, but not at all. I enjoyed Culkin’s and the evil girl’s characters but they were severely underdeveloped. I didn’t laugh once. I wasn’t excited about any of the events unfolding nor did I truly care about the focus of the story. That being said, it’s a competently made film with a few good moments that make you wish it was something more. I think the Christian thing to do would be to skip that movie. My rating: 5.5/10

Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (Saturday special): This was at least 3 times better than I anticipated. I pretty much had fun with it from the first frame to the last one. It has funny dialogues and a tone of jokes. I’m glad I discovered it with the MCMC! Now I want more Elvira… More, more, more!! My rating: 7/10

The Uninvited 7/10
Gifted 8/10
Ed and his dead mother 8/10
Saved 6/10
Elvira: Mistress of the Dark 8/10

I watched:

Fiddler on the Roof 1971 8/10 This is a well made film, but I do think it is too long. The performances are good though and I like the songs.

The Brave Little Toaster 1987 7/10 I liked the characters. I thought the story was alright.

Sleepaway Camp 1983 9/10 This is a lot of fun. Felissa Rose gives an enjoyable and memorable performance and the ending is fantastic.

Pete’s Dragon 1977 6/10 This is too long. There is a lot going on, some of it works and some of it doesn't. I liked the dragon.

Dolls 1986 8/10 An entertaining and fun horror film.

Spring Parade 1940 6/10 This was just alright. Acting is fine, songs are decent.

Spinout 1966 6/10 Some fun moments, but overall not one of Elvis's better films.

The Horror of Party Beach 1964 4/10 I watched the Mystery Science Theater version. It's not good, but there were a couple amusing moments. I kind of liked the goofy monster suits.

Flame of Barbary Coast 1945 6/10 This was alright. Acting is fine and there are a couple good moments.

Rumpelstiltskin 1987 5/10 I didn't find this very enjoyable.

Pajama Party 1964 7/10 I enjoyed this. It's silly fun.

It’s a Bikini World 1967 5/10 This isn't as entertaining or fun as some of the other beach themed musicals of that era.

Across the Universe 2007 7/10 This was a mixed experience for me, as I feel the film is somewhat uneven. The songs are great, of course. I really liked the musical performances in the film and some of the sequences are fantastic. I loved Let It Be and I Want To Hold Your Hand. The story was the weakest part for me. I felt that Jim Sturgess was miscast. I didn't care for his acting and I didn't find his character interesting. The film is also at least 20 minutes too long.

The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini 1966 5/10 The writing isn't very good and it should have been funnier. There are a lot of wacky and silly shenanigans here and it doesn't always work. Slightly amusing and sort of fun at times, but runs out of steam too quickly.

Fireball 500 1966 5/10 This is mostly boring with a couple alright moments.

Sergeant Deadhead 1965 5/10 A couple amusing moments, but not very entertaining and not as fun as it should have been. Need more of the chimp.

Three Little Girls in Blue 1946 6/10 The acting is fine. The story is just mediocre.

Wonka 2023 8/10 Timothée Chalamet is delightful in this sweet musical fantasy adventure. The rest of the cast is good too and I liked the songs. Cinematography, costumes, and sets are well done.

Hellzapoppin’ 1941 6/10 There's a lot of wacky shenanigans and silliness going on here and I appreciate what they were going for. It didn't all land for me though and I found it more amusing than genuinely funny.

Ed and His Dead Mother 1993 8/10 Good performances from the cast, especially Steve Buscemi and Miriam Margolyes. This is a smart and funny film with a sharp screenplay.

Saved 2004 6/10 This was somewhat uneven. There are some good moments, but there is a lot that didn't feel believable and didn't work for me. Performances are hit and miss. Jena Malone is the best of the bunch and a couple of the others are decent. Mandy Moore gives the worst performance, being way too over the top, and Martin Donovan was not good either. This should have been funnier, although there are a couple amusing lines of dialogue. If you are looking for a great film about teens, faith and sexuality, check out The Wise Kids (2011). It touches on some of the same themes in a more nuanced and effective way.

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark 1988 8/10 This was fun. I enjoyed Cassandra Peterson's performance and I liked the humour.

Colour Out of Space 2019 7/10 I like Cage's performance and the cool visuals.

Creed III (2023) - It was fine. By the end I kind of got what Jordan was going for, but the road to it had some ups and downs. Speaking of Downs, Jonathan Majors apparently decided to make this performance his audition tape for In Living Color? 6.5

Ed and His Dead Mother (1993) - Kind of horny, kind of silly, but consistently fun. This plays some similar horror/comedy notes that one would expect in an episode of Tales From the Crypt, but add to it some parental issues and an off kilter portrayal of suburbia and you've got a stew going, baby! Always welcome is Steve Buscemi playing perhaps the most "normal" character in the movie for a change. This is what a genie might produce if I had wished for a movie like Edward Scissorhands except not a failure on every artistic level. 7

Saved! (2004) - I saw this in theaters, and revisiting it is such a revelation. A lot of the humor stems from social situations and contexts that one would already "get" - especially the dealings of Pastor Skip and nuances of a Christian high school. That said, elements of the story play a little underdeveloped upon reflection. Macaulay Culkin might not have deserved an Oscar nomination for his performance here, but I would have at least liked to have seen the For Your Consideration ads. 7

Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988) - Who am I to question the creative wiles of the horror queen herself? I couldn't help but compare the general conceit of an oddball road trip-slash-fish out of water comedy with Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985), and as was mentioned in the chat this would have benefitted from a more assured auteur's aesthetic. Who would have been the appropriate choice is anyone's guess, but I'd be fine if Ridley Scott ditched Black Rain to focus on this project. 6.5

Color Out of Space (2019) - Needed to be saved for a Nic Cage double feature with Mandy (2018). 6.5

Also this week:

I Saw the TV Glow (2024) - The show-within-the-movie doesn't work within itself, and that's from where most of my issues with this one stem. The in-show narrative has to match or at least somewhat parallel the characters as viewers, and that's a roundabout way of promoting We're All Going to the World's Fair (2002) from the same director. 5.5

Shakes the Clown (1991) - It's an examination of comedy as a medium while also featuring a miserable party clown trying to schlep himself up in the morning. Not everything is a laugh a minute, but as a whole this movie presents a world-weary yet optimistic view of the arts. 7

Sweet Lies (1987) - Hahaha, this is dumb. 6.

The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed (2023) - No one cares, but I thought this worked pretty well. 7

I love Elvira, the real life boobarella from the Simpsons ❤️

This week I watched Alien vs. Predator 2004 and really enjoyed it

I watched all the predator movies about 2 years ago and rated this one 7/10. I liked it too!

I've been putting on Knightrider, but only in the background, really. The theme is better than the show itself!

Movies

-Executive Decision (1996)
The movie has an interesting, sort of realistic approach to its subject, but there are some moments that are rather absurd. The biggest issue, I'd say, is that the movie could easily have been trimmed down with at least 30 minutes.

-Turbulence (1997)
So the movie starts out okay, but quickly gets more illogical and absurd. At times it seemed like I was watching Terror Train on a plane instead.

-Payback (1999)
I hadn't seen this movie in ages and I couldn't remember a thing. Not surprising, since the movie is quite boring. The blue filter was sooo ugly and I couldn't sympathize with Mel Gibson either.

TV Shows

-Dallas - marathon

-Pacific Blue - marathon

Executive Decision : I’m always in for a good testosterones field 90s action movie, even if this is actually more of a thriller. Good tension build up, lame bad guys but the ending was downright satisfying. 7/10

Turbulence: oh gosh, I remember watching this with my parents when I was a kid and it terrified me. Now I wanna rewatch it and see how it holds up.

The Fall (2022) 6.5/10 When a high-rise climb goes wrong, best friends Becky and Hunter find themselves stuck at the top of a 2,000-foot TV tower.

Could have been a 7, but it was too long at 1 hour 50 minutes. 90 min. would have been perfect.

The fall: can’t find my rating for this but I’d say it was somewhere around a 6.5
