Without Googling (of course) I will guess it is pandemic-related. Not Covid, maybe The Spanish Flu of 1918.

reply

incorrect. before that, a good attempt.

POW ships during/after the Civil war, also Revolutionary war. There have been many.

The Trans-Atlantic Slave trade was a coffin fleet.

reply

coffin ships refer to immigration from a particular country following a certain event

reply

Is it Chinese immigrants who died on a ship en route to California? I seem to vaguely recall hearing something like that.

reply

right premise. wrong country

reply

Dracula arriving in London? Just kidding.

I'm not sure, I feel like I've heard that expression associated with more than one country but I'm not sure.

reply

There isn't a single historical incident when that phrase was operative.

It never got worse than the Africans packed in like sardines, or the POWs crammed into the holds of ships stuck out at harbor.

My ancestors came over on some of those.

reply

it refers to the ships that transported irish immigrants to north american after the irish potato famine in 1848. thousands died en route. some of my ancestors were on those ships

Good poster. Its unfortunate he/she had a meltdown, for whatever (must be trivial) reason and left the forum. He/she had a lot of fans.

Regarding the 'coffin ships', the term is associated with Irish being freighted over in horrible conditions during the famine. I don't know what conditions my ancestors faced, but it was during that era.

However, this was not a unique imposition. That was my point.

reply

no one here has ancestors from this country???

Just a guess but when the British fleet invaded Long Island and And New York City during the early days of the American Revolution rebel prisoners were put on prison ships and a lot of them died.

I know the answer, but I googled it. Is that allowed?
